Mikasa woke too a too bright light shining in through the curtains she left open. It took a moment to wake up, and stretch before the smell of freshly baked bread from the kitchen downstairs caused her to sit up.
It felt for a moment as though everything had been a dream, but the nearly empty room, and the place next to her where Eren still lay fast asleep still caused a small sharp pang of hurt in her heart that cut deeper then she thought she let it.
The only two Mother's she'd ever known to bake this early were gone, and the only two fathers she'd ever had, who'd be sitting with their wives reading the newspaper were gone. The things they had in common without ever knowing, and the ways they had been different too, were gone.
It felt for a moment like she'd cry, but she managed to pull whatever pieces of pride she had into a makeshift calm to cover the storm of sadness tearing her insides apart as she began to pull herself from the bed.
She was stopped, by a warm hand on hers that pulled her back into the bed and wrapped her in a brief and firm hug. Eren said nothing until he nodded, let her go and sat up. "We should go help with breakfast, or at least help Connie keep Sasha out of the kitchen until it's done."
