My life had fallen apart in the last few days. My parents had died, along with the rest of the human population three days ago. Food ran out two days ago. Yesterday, an earthquake hit. And today, I couldn't find any water. It was not a fun time.
The entire city of Philadelphia was a wasteland. Where City Hall had once stood, rubble littered the ground. I constantly wandered the empty streets, hoping desperately for a sign of life. The dead bodies littering the ground made me absolutely terrified. Wherever I walked, nothing became better. Dust filled the air, clogging my eyes and lungs. All I needed was to see some other human being.
I arrived at my only shelter, the still standing entrance to a hotel, just to find my backpack gone. This would be the worst thing that had happened yet. My last water bottle, a book, and my now dead cell phone were in there. I had no clue how I would live without them.
I plopped down on the ground and sobbed. I couldn't take world destruction anymore. I wanted to die with the rest of the human population.
"It's okay," a voice comforted from behind me. I sucked in my breath, afraid of what it was. I turned my head and saw a stocky boy with red brown hair. He was sipping from my water bottle. At first, I was furious.
"I'm sorry I disturbed you. I needed the water. The name's Taurus."
"Who are you?"
"One of the survivors I guess. Why me? I have no clue. Do you?"
"No. I was wondering if you knew. And why you took my stuff."
"My best guess is to show me what it is like to lose my laziness for a while. And I would be dead without your water."
"I don't have that issue," I responded, knowing this was not the cause of all the destruction. "And I also need water."
"Well, lucky you. Maybe you have a different lesson to learn."
"I guess I could be less sensitive."
"You never told me your name. If we are to be allies, I should know your name."
"Cancer."
"Pretty," he responded. I could tell that Taurus was easy to give his trust. So was I, but the recent events had twisted me so much.
We sat in silence for a while, both now drinking from the water bottle. I knew I was sharing with a stranger, but that was the least disturbing thing that had happened to me recently.
Taurus sure drank a lot of my water, because we had finished in a couple of minutes. This was relatively disturbing to me. We needed resources, and greedily using them was not about to help the situation.
"Now what?" I asked.
"I don't know where to go or what to do. Maybe we could scream for help?"
"I would rather not lose my voice," I responded logically.
"Any better ideas?"
"We could search for more survivors. We can't be the only two," I reasoned.
"You're right. There's always a team in TV shows."
"Yeah."
This being the best idea, Taurus stood up and then helped me up. We set off into the distance, him carrying the supplies for me. It appeared he was helpful, kind, and even a bit cute.
Soon we came across a building that was still standing, a small miracle in a place like this. Taurus raised a fist into the air and started dancing. I stood awkwardly next to him, but there was no way I could stop a bit of a grin from spreading across my face. He busted down the door and found a grocery store, which somehow still had electricity and food. I'm not a religious person, but it seemed God was on our side. Taurus ran up to a ham and hugged it. I squealed and ran to the dessert aisle to find a girl sitting and eating Cafe Mocha gelato.
"Hi..." I said quietly.
"OMG, you're another survivor!!!! OMGOMGOMG!" she said, before fainting, her head plopping into the gelato.
"Taurus, we've got company..."
