"See you soon!" Maya chirped before hanging up.
As I tucked my phone back into my bag, I looked up to see Milo still focused on his notes, oblivious to the conversation I just had. Before I could say anything, the sound of footsteps approached from behind, and I turned to see Maya and Farkle entering the library.
"There she is," Maya said with a grin, her voice a hushed whisper as she navigated the quiet space. Farkle followed closely behind, a knowing smile on his face.
"Hey, guys," I greeted, surprised but happy to see them.
"Thought we'd come to find you ourselves," Farkle said as he pulled out a chair and sat down beside me. "Maya was getting antsy."
Maya playfully rolled her eyes as she sat across from Milo, who looked up with a slight start, realizing he was no longer alone with me. "I wasn't getting antsy," she protested, though the smirk on her face suggested otherwise. "I was just wondering if you'd fallen into some kind of academic black hole."
"Not quite," I laughed, glancing at Milo. "We were just being productive—or at least, trying to be."
Milo nodded in agreement. "I can confirm. Riley did almost drift off, though."
Maya shot me a mock-stern look. "Falling asleep in the library? Riles, I'm impressed."
"It's been a long morning," I admitted, giving a small shrug. "But I'm awake, thanks to Milo."
Milo gave a modest shrug, clearly pleased with himself. "All in a day's work."
"So, what's the plan?" Farkle asked, glancing between the three of us. "We're all here now, might as well do something together."
Maya's eyes lit up. "How about we grab lunch? There's that new place near campus everyone's talking about."
Milo, predictably, seemed reluctant to leave his work behind, but Maya wasn't about to take no for an answer. She leaned in, giving him her best persuasive smile. "Come on, Milo. Even geniuses need to eat."
Milo hesitated, glancing at his notes before finally relenting with a small sigh. "Alright, lunch it is. But only because you asked so nicely, Maya."
"Perfect!" Maya said, standing up and grabbing her bag. "Let's get out of here before Milo changes his mind."
With that, we all gathered our things and made our way out of the library together, the weight of the morning finally starting to lift as we headed off to enjoy a well-deserved break.
As we walked out of the library, I couldn't resist nudging Milo. "You should tell Maya and Farkle your joke," I suggested, knowing full well that Farkle would be the only one who truly appreciated it.
Milo glanced at me, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "Alright, but don't say I didn't warn you."
As soon as we stepped outside, Milo turned to the others. "I'm going to tell you a joke."
Maya raised an eyebrow, a mischievous grin already forming on her face. "What's the gist, physicist?"
Milo stopped in his tracks, heaving a dramatic sigh as if the very idea of telling the joke was exhausting. "Why do I bother with blondes?" he muttered under his breath, just loud enough for Maya to hear.
She rolled her eyes, nudging him with her elbow. "Careful, brainiac, or you'll lose your audience before the punchline."
Milo gave her a dry look before continuing. "Fine, fine. Knock knock."
Maya, still skeptical, played along. "Who's there?"
"Interrupting physicists," Milo said, his tone as serious as ever.
