"And here we are again," Cody exclaims from the drivers side of the car. "Never in a million years would I ever be truly excited to come back to school."
I roll my eyes. "Never in a million years would I ever hear the peace and quiet of a driving car. I always have to be stuck with you."
"I wouldn't be complaining. If it wasn't for me, your life would be boring" He winks.
"You should stop lying to yourself Cody, it's not healthy."
Can't I just have a day to myself where I'm not constantly trying to be a babysitter??
I'm tired of waking up in the morning with bed head, getting dressed with bloodshot eyes, and coming into the car to the over-excited ways of Cody Larson. He would make a great reality TV star, everything good and spontaneous happens to him. Mine would be national geographic, where the predators out win the prey no matter how hard they try.

It's a dirty Monday with rain clouds overlooking the mountains threatening to pour out any second and while that's happening my best friends ego is still sky high as always, so typically it's a normal day here in Maverick city.
School can be hard sometimes. Nope scratch that. It can be hard all the time. You just have a choice whether to let it make you or break you. For Cody, it's somehow both.
Cody grunts as we pull up into the school. "School is fun they said, imagine all the friends you'll make in high school they said." He slams the door on his way out.
"Who told you that?" I ask him while getting my backpack out of the car and closing the door.
"It's a metaphor Bri," he gives me a 'duh' expression "no one actually ever says that."
"Hey hey hey," I put my hands up in defense "You'd be surprised by the optimism some people have."
He throws a scowl "I never found any."
"Yah and that's good. None of us want you corrupting any little optimism left in the world."
"hm," he stops at the entrance and puts his hand on his chin pretending to be thinking "You know, you do have a point." He shrugs and continues to walk into the building.
I shake my head. "You're clueless."
The familiar smell of dying freedom and broken dreams. That's how you know you're back in this hell hole, with the jocks and the majority of the popular kids breathing down your back every step of the way. They never left me alone. Around here I guess you can call me popular, well, if popular meant knowing a lot of people without them actually being your friend then yah sure, why not.
People knew me as the black haired-mysterious-back-in-the-corner-be-careful-she-might-pull-out-a-knife type of person. My reputation is what keeps me back from being "involved" in anything school related. Anytime I actually talked to anyone but Cody, shocked faces get passed around fairly quickly. People hate me for no reason but to hate me. It's not like I get bullied or anything which actually surprises me too, I mean, they have a lot to say about me behind my back, someone's bound to say it to my face at one point or another.
"What are you thinking about?" Cody flicked my nose with his pen.
"What do you mean?" I flicked him harder on the arm.
He rubbed his arm with a pained frown "I meant you never think sooooo why do it now."
" I do think! I'm the best thinkerer out there!" I dodge a freshmen that was leaning to close to my side of the hallway. Stay in your lane people.
"The fact that you just said that explains a lot."
After a while of walking, Cody stops at my locker wheezing as if he just ran a marathon "Why does your locker have to be all the way across the school?" Cody whines.
I roll my eyes while opening my locker "Do we really have to go through this again?"
I was moved into this locker at the beginning of sophomore year because I was "bothering" this girl that had her locker right next to mine. She told the counselor that I had satanic symbols in my locker and it was disturbing her. The counselor didn't believe her but since we were feuding too much she decided to move me. Apparently the other girl couldn't move because she got anxouis being in unfamiliar places.
"Yah she was a wimp."I mumble to myself.
Cody examines me in silence while I shove my things into my locker. I cough awkwardly and turn to face him "You want to say something don't you"
"Maybe, maybe not. I'm still trying to figure out if I should."
I slam my locker shut. "Well you should. Unless its about the world ending, I want to be surprised."
"Are you sure? I don't want to you know...... trouble you or something."
"Is it bad news?" We start walking down the hall to our classes.
"Depends...." He fidgets his hands nervously.
"For you or for me?" I ask him with a blank look.
I cringe in disgust at a couple making out in the middle of the hallway. "DON'T YOU PEOPLE KNOW SHAME? SOME PEOPLE HAVE LIVES TO KEEP UP WITH!" They loosen their grasp to give me death glares. Hey for all I know I saved their lives, they looked like they were suffocating each other. The boy leaves with a middle finger pointed my way while the girl follows him like a lost pup.
Cody starts laughing. "You always just brighten the world don't you? You should make it a hobby"
I roll my eyes with a smile "I think we both know the world wouldn't appreciate it."
"Well here's your stop, too bad Bri wish we could talk more but I have to be a good student for once and be off. " he nods to the classroom. "Don't beat anyone up today you hear me?" he gives me a stern look and turns to leave.
"No promises!" I call out to him.
He's halfway down the hall before our mysterious conversation suddenly comes back to mind. "Cody what about that thing you were going to tell me!?"
He suddenly halts and turns around slowly with a sorrow filled stare. He takes a few seconds as if in hesitation. And with that small hesitation, came a huge explanation. I knew what he was going to say. Only one thing in my whole lifetime gave me a problem that both of us couldn't solve.
"August Wilde is back." And with that said he leaves me in the familiar hole I dug myself in a long time ago.
