It's my first day of Grade 4. My mother wakes my brother Frankie and I up for the first day back after the long, wonderful summer, that I spent with my best friend, Olivia. She gives us these super delicious egg sandwiches then pretty much ships us off on the bus. I really don't like buses. I hate sitting on the inside because I feel super claustrophobic. I was pretty much sitting in the middle of our bus but not close to the big kids because they were pretty scary. I was stuck in the window seat with this boy, Max. He was mean to me.
I get to school around 8:45 and walk to the big kid area of the school yard, because this year I'm not stuck with the grade 1,2, and 3s. I check the windows, where it says all of the classes and what teacher you had. I had Mrs Hardy! I heard she was super nice from my friend, Stephen who was in Grade 7 this year. It was originally a grade 4-5 split. But there were really only like 7 grade 5's so they left to go to some other class room. I sat beside one of my first ever crushes, Travis. There was this super pretty girl named Sierra. I found it funny because she has the same name as one of my really good friends, Cierra, but spelt with an "S" instead of a "C". Mr C, our science teacher, came into the classroom and said
"Hey-o!" and pointed at Sierra. "Aren't you my neighbor?" She laughed and said
"Yeah!" He just randomly walked out of our classroom.
Mrs. Hardy spent that whole first day getting us all organized with our books and even playing fun games to learn things about each other. We all sat in a circle. Sierra sat beside me and Travis on the other side. First it was Abby then Olivia, Annabelle, Curtis, then Sierra. She went on about her old school and talked about how her older brother passed away. She never said how. She also added in
"I love to sing!". I turned to her and yelled
"Really!? Me too!" She then asked
"Are we like best friends now?" I laughed and said
"Yes! I'd love that!" She smiled, gave me the biggest hug and then proceeded to say
"I'll sing for you at recess, you sing for me too."
Recess came along and she grabbed my hand and pulled me over to the big tree, my friends and I used to meet at in like grade 3. She asked
"What song?" I picked the first song on my mind.
"The one about the 3 little birds!". She got super excited and started to sing.
"Three little birds sat on my window, and they told me I don't need to worry. Summer came like cinnamon, so sweet. Little girls double-dutch on the concrete. Girl, put your records on, tell me your favourite song, You go ahead, let your hair down"
I freaked out, screamed for Cierra, Olivia, and all the girls and pretty much the whole grade telling them,
"Listen to Sierra sing!" She was amazing. Her voice was just beautiful, she sang it so many times I had that song stuck in my head for hours. It came to the point she asked me to sing. I was super scared. What if I wasn't better than her? I just took a deep breath and sang the exact song she did but messed up the words.
"Three little birds sat on my window, and they told me I don't need to worry. Summer came a life, so sweet. Little girls double-dutch in the concrete."
I noticed I sang it completely wrong and Sierra obviously made me aware of that.
"You messed up the words." I replied with
"Yeah, I know."
