New York City has always been the home for me. Adventure around every corner, and always something new waiting to happen. Of course, with something new occurring every day, new people tend to cross paths with me as well. New in town, and having nowhere to go I came across a flier. An owner of a small bakery in the city had a few rooms for renting. Roommates didn't cross my mind until I came across that paper. It was an affordable place to stay, in an expensive area. It was a deal I couldn't afford to give up.
I hoped my days would continue with a little bit more adventure, and suddenly my hope came true.
I met the short blonde ball of sunshine at a church on my way to the bakery. She was ranting about Christianity. I wasn't too religious so I just muted it out as I kept walking. That was, until I saw her drop everything and run straight into traffic. Concerned, I looked up and down the street. I didn't see her until she collided into me.
"Oh, I'm so sorry!" She blurted out in a slight accent, "I didn't mean to I swear!"
I shook my head, "No it's fine...are you ok? I just saw you run into the street."
She laughed a bit, "Oh no it's nothing...just doing a good deed is all!"
"Good deed?"
She opened her hands revealing a small mouse in her palm. It was white and chubby, it looked panicked in a weird way. She smiled down at the rodent, "Oh, thank the heavens you're alright!"
"How...?" I muttered confused.
She sighed her smiling fading for a fraction of a second, "Oh I just had to save her! She was scampering off into the street so I ran and scooped her up! I couldn't bear to see such an innocent creature die, not even while I am preaching."
She wore a flowing white shirt, and forest green leggings. Her golden curls shined in the sunlight, in fact she herself seemed to be glowing. A crown of a variety of flowers sat atop her head, and she seemed to carry this joyous energy with her. To see her care for such a small animal made me myself smile.
I looked at her impressed. She was as short as a young teenager and yet somehow, she managed to stay safe in the busy street. She placed the mouse in a pocket, cooing at her as if the small rodent was a child. She was just about to apologize again and return to her duties when she looked at the flier in my hand and the suitcase in my other.
"Say!" She exclaimed, "Are you heading to the bakery too?!"
I nodded, "Well yeah."
"Can I come with you?" She asked with pleading eyes, "I was planning on going after my volunteer work at the church was done, but now that you're here it'll be safer! I haven't been in the city for long, and I think two heads are better than one! So...what do you say Mister...uh,"
"Diath," I replied, "Yeah you can come with...it'll be easier to navigate that way."
I noticed that she had a satchel in her hand, most likely her belongings as well.
"Evelyn! It'll be a pleasure walking with you Diath!"
We walked together, down the streets examining maps, and checking our phones. The constant talk of her God, and the random church hymns were irritating at first, but I eventually became used to them. It was nice to be accompanied by someone, and not wandering on my own in such a vast place.
The sights amazed me. I've lived in New York, but never in the city itself only visited. Now that I have the chance to live here, who knows what adventures await? Apparently, counting Evelyn and I, one more person is supposed to be renting. Judging by how few fliers I've seen, not many were interested. I wondered who the third person would be?
Evelyn stopped suddenly, in front of a bar. I was confused seeing as this didn't appear to be her scene. I looked in the direction she was staring and found my answer. A man with blonde hair, not as golden as my new short companion's, was singing on a small stage just outside the bar. He had an acoustic guitar in his arms, and was performing almost perfectly. He had a tan and a Californian accent, he clearly wasn't from the east coast.
The blonde cherub-like girl was bouncing up and down cheering wildly. Her golden curls bounced with her. She was clearly swoon by the musician's music.
"Thanks folks," The man on stage said, taking a swig of beer, "That's all for today."
He stumbled off the stage, clearly drunk, and collected the tip money he earned from an empty bottle.
I was about to tell Evelyn to get going, until I realized she was gone. Immediately after he left the stage, she bolted towards him.
"Of course," I said with a heavy sigh, and wandered after her.
