His room was dim with last years Christmas lights he neglected to take down. Their multicolored glow reflected off his pale white walls. Darkness consumed the window to the right of his bed. The little light that rippled around his ceiling vanished as it hit the window pane. He couldn't see anything aside from the blackening void that was the outside world.
It was past his usual bed time. He preferred to be asleep by 11 because it made his life easier in the early morning hours, but something kept him up. Nothing out of the ordinary sometimes he stayed awake to listen to music or the sound of a warm summers rain on the roof. Tonight was just another night where his mind wandered off for a stroll and forgot to check in. There was no rain and he had turned off his music after finishing up an essay for English. It was something else tonight, thoughts were keeping him up.
He laid in his twin size bed, which undoubtedly was too small for him now, and blinked blankly at the ceiling. Despite the activity being concentrated inside his mind his body began to sweat as he lay still in his favorite Star Wars pajamas. His heart picked up pace and his breathing hastened to accommodate. What could a 17 year old be so worked up about? He didn't bother glancing at the time via his phone, Fitbit, or clock. He seemingly knew he wasn't going to be able to sleep anytime soon. No, whatever is on his mind isn't going away for a while. Stress from school? Maybe, but he's had all A's since middle school. He goes to school and pays attention and gets his work done long before it's due. Anxious about a girl?! That could be it! He hasn't had a girlfriend since freshmen year when he finally dated his first crush from middle school. That didn't last nearly as long as he thought. Sophomore year she left him for a boy she's known all her life. He was devastated for months, but he must be over it by now. It's a girl. He's probably overthinking every possible scenario of asking her out to dinner, or maybe a movie, heck maybe even mini golf. Last time he went mini golfing.. well.. his family was asked to leave. No more game nights because of hole 9. Of course he hadn't been the issue. It was his mother and her new boyfriend, she has a new one every week or two. He stood there and watched the inevitable unfold until he hopped in the car with his mom as she drove off without her ex. Maybe mini golfing is off the table for a first or second or third date.
Lying still almost still his jaw moves ever so slightly as his teeth press against each other in intense thought. He swallows hard and sits up rapidly. His arms outstretched behind him propping his body up at a 90 degree angle. He takes four deep breaths before reaching to his left for his glass of water. He unknowingly almost overreached it, he didn't make full eye contact with glass. His eyes were aimed at his floor, probably because that's just where they landed. He takes a sip and slowly places the glass back over onto his desk. He removes his right arm from behind himself and shifts his body onto that side. He's most comfortable sleeping on his side. Looks like he's gonna try and get some shut eye.
