The fog gushing into the street made Emily uneasy. It was unusual for that to happen since it was summer. As she was walking down the street, Emily noticed that the lights in the light posts were flickering and no one was playing outside. She then got around the corner to her house and really was creeped out to find out that all the cars we gone from everyone's house. She sped up as she got closer to her house. She was coming back from a hiking up in the hills. She goes at night so she can relax and look over the beautiful city of Los Angeles. No distractions and no service up there so she can't use her phone. She had been going up there a lot more lately due to some stuff going on in her life. She was recently diagnosed with depression and anxiety and was told she had to see a psychiatrist and take medication. When she got to the front door of her house she noticed that the porch light was not on, which led her to believe that no one was home, even though her parents said they would be home when she got back form hiking. She started to unlock the door and noticed that is wasn't locked, she knew something was wrong because her law enforcement family always stressed about safety. Emily knew not to go in and call her parents right away. As she was starting to take her phone out of her backpack she heard a familiar screeching. It was the Smith's garage door opening. The Smith family looked terrified as they were shoving and large suitcases in their car. Emily was worried for she called out, " Mr. and Mrs. Smith, what's going on? Where is everyone? Can you help me, I think there is someone in my house." As the rest of their family was packing the car, Mr. Smith came running over to Emily. He frantically said, " Emily you have to come with us! Something went wrong, there are people attacking each other!" Emily responded, " I can't go I have to wait for my parents!" Mr. Smith looked at Emily with confusion, he then proceeded to say, " Emily... don't you know? Your parents already left. They were the first ones to leave. We are the last ones here because we didn't believe what people were saying about what was happening. Emily come on! We don't have much more time to leave before those freakish people come here!!" Mr. Smith was tugging on Emily's arm as she stood there in disbelief that her parents could just leave her like that. She then snapped out of it and firmly told Mr.Smith , " No." He could not believe what just came out of Emily's mouth. You could hear Mrs. Smith yelling at her husband to just leave her and get in the car. As Mr. Smith was running back to his car, Emily finished taking out her phone and saw 17 missed call notifications. She then remembered that there was no service up there so there was no possible way to reach her. She stood at her front porch as she watched the Smiths speed out of their driveway and down the street. She was still trying to process the thought of her parents leaving her,but now she didn't have to worry about the door being unlocked because of an intruder. She heard a low beeping sound growing louder as she was getting closer to the front door. It took her a few seconds but then realized it was the Emergency Broadcast Station on the TV. She then rushed inside and locked all the door and windows. When she finished, she watched the never ending replays of what was happening on the channel. Indeed Mr. Smith was right about people attacking each other, but the channel said a virus outbreak was out on the loose. The words, " Do Not Get Infected By The Peoples Bite" were flashing across the top of the TV screen. She was starting to panic but then remembered the plan the family had if they ever needed to evacuate the city in case of an emergency. She quickly went up to the attic where there were maps, guns, large backpacks, and medical kits. Usually there was three of everything in that room for her parents and Emily, but this time she noticed that only her stuff was there. She looked on the desk and saw note that read, " Emily, we are sorry that we had to leave you behind. Luckily you know our emergency plan, if you have forgotten, we have left all the information about everything you need to know about. You know where to meet us, how to get there, and how to protect yourself. We will wait there for you and we explain more when we see you. Please be safe and smart. We love you." Emily knew what she had to do. Emily then proceeded to get a backpack and began to pack it with extra ammo freeze-dried food, extra clothes, and a wilderness survival kit. She then started to put a bullet proof vest on and putting on leg holsters. She finished putting everything together and went downstairs to the backyard. When she got in the backyard, she pulled tarp off of a hummer. She began to put everything in the car including some can food from inside the house. She put the dog in the car and was getting ready to drive off when she heard something. It didn't take her long to figure out that the noise was someone trying to get over the gate on the side of the house. That was the only exit for her to get the car out of the backyard. So, she pretended that she wasn't there and hid under the car. The noise suddenly stopped after there was a smack on the pavement. What she saw next terrified her. As she was looking from under the car, she saw a charred, bloody Mr. Smith with his stomach ripped open. Emily wanted to scream and cry but she knew something wasn't right because there was no way he would be able to get up and walk, let alone climb over a 10 foot gate. She was starting to tear up, but then she noticed that the used to be Mr. Smith was sniffing the air like a dog as if he was looking for something. It looked like that he was starting to go away, but at this moment Emily's body filled with more fear than you can imagine. As he was starting to go away, she heard a loud bark coming from within the car. The dog was barking at Mr. Smith and he turned around and started towards the car. Emily got scared and ran from beneath the car and pulled the gun from her holster and shot Mr. Smith. But for some reason Mr.Smith kept coming at Emily. She then started to yell at him that she will shoot again if he comes any closer. She was shocked to see that he didn't listen, and she then shot him in the middle of the forehead just before she was in his reach. Silence... there was nothing but silence after that. The dog stopped barking as soon as the last sound of a gun went off, Mr. Smith was not growling anymore. Emily ran back into the car and silently wept. Soon, Emily gathered the strength to leave the house, she knew she had to because she was scared that the gun shot would attract more of the things that attacked her. She opened the gate and drove out the backyard. About 15 minutes later when Emily reached the highway entrance, her soul was crushed as she drove past an overturned car that was in flames. She knew who's car this was, an she hated the thought of imagining how it happened. The car belonged the Smith family. To be continued ...
