It's one of those books written as text and maybe some social media, to re-clarify

Plot: A class are given phone numbers- text friends, really. They were expected to befriend the Americans on the other side of the phone
The English kids get nothing, other then this being a 'valuable experience that may improve their maturiry'- something a lot of them are in severe need of
The Americans in this story are, to put it nicely, antisocial little shits. They're rude, and leave much to be desired after a conversation. So perhaps, just maybe, the social, arrogant Brits they're texting will teach them a little something
