My Teacher Smells Like A Barn

"Now who can tell me who the Greek god of thievery is?" my history teacher

droned on. I slumped my head on my desk, bored. On the side of me, Ellie

waves her hand aggressively in the air. "Yes Miss Rosa?" "Hermes is the Greek

god of thievery, also lies and trickery" she states, sounding like one of those

mythological books she likes so much.

This class was boring. I tapped my feet impatiently under my desk, and

doodled on my hand. Nothing special, just a staff with two snakes wrapped

around it.My name is Victoria Thief. The last name is ironic, considering that's

what I am. While Ellie turns around for a second, I swipe a pencil off her desk,

she has them all in a neat row, perfectly sharpened.

"Now Miss Thief, what are Hades henchmen called?" Mr Salowitz asks. "Uhh,

the death demons" I say lamely. Next to me Ellie is practically jumping out of

her seat to answer. Mr Salowitz looks at me sharply. "See me after class Miss

Thief". Then he calls on Ellie. She gets the question right. Typical.

After class, I march up to Mr Salowitz's desk, slouching like a demented giraffe.

"I don't understand Miss Thief. You're a smart girl. How is it that you cannot

answer even the simplest question?" he asks. His voice is soft, he isn't angry.

Somehow, this is worse than being yelled at. I feel like I've let him down. "I

don't know" I answer in a monotone voice. He smells like something weird. A

barnyard animal? Strange. "Well unless you do the extra credit essay, I'm

afraid you'll be failing this term" he says sadly. I just look down at the floor. "Is

there anything at all, that you want to tell me Miss Thief?" he asks. "No sir" I

reply. "You may go now" he says.

I walk out the door quickly, but meander at my locker, and stop at the

bathroom. I'm definitely not ugly, with my dark coffe skin and curly black hair.

But I look really tired. My hair is frizzy from the humidity. My eyes are

bloodshot, and my skin is dull. I splash my face with cold water and turn to

leave. As it always does when I have to go home, my stomach drops.
