"Levi! You need to see this!"
Almost immediately after this is said, a rushed Levi sprints to the scene.
"What is it Ben?" Levi responded.
Ben, a tough-looking man in his late-twenty's, is staring at the ground in the third western oat field. He's running his fingers through the rough soil, silently feeling for slight differences in the ground.
"It...seems that the fields around this area are lacking nutrients severely", says Ben, still feeling the Earth.
"It's fine, I've made an order for enough fertilizer to cover all these fields", Levi responded quickly and efficiently.
"Uh...Sir? I'm fairly sure that covering the land with a layer of fertilizer is a short-hand solution...", Ben proposed questionably.
"Yes, I know this."
"So then why are we doing this if we have to do it all over again next year? Sir, I know that because you are the land owner of the farm that I am supposed to treat you with respect, but I just don't understand what you are thinking."
Levi looks over at him, sighs, and speaks in a sad yet stern voice.
"Ben, you saw what happened to the corn, hay, and potato farms."
Ben looked up, with a look of concern on his face as he said,"Yes...I remember...I worked on a corn farm before that crop didn't grow anymore..."
"So", Levi responded,"I'm afraid that the days of oats are numbered. Soon they will all freeze like the rest of the plants. I'm giving oats, eh, maybe a year, at most. If I can save some money by giving these plants a one-time solution that will last a year, then why wouldn't I take that?"
Ben looked at him, shocked, but he did not say a word. He just stood up and went back to warming water.
Levi started to walk back to his home. He walked with a slightly quick, almost rushed pace. His black hair was roughly cut to a semi-neat, yet casual look. He wore a golf shirt with an old ski jacket over top of it. His jeans were slightly too long, and the torn hiking boots exposed his gray wool socks. The gray-blue eyes of his were covered with tinted Polaroid sunglasses that were held together on the left side with cheap tape.
As he walked up the steps of his house, he knocked off all the ice and snow he had picked up on the way there. Luckily, it was early fall and not too much snow and sleet had fallen down. As usual, he grabbed the car window scraper he had and began to break the frost on the window.
"It's no use to cars anymore," he said every day,"So why shouldn't I have it?"
While he was busy working on the windows, he didn't notice the suited man walk up behind him.
"Um...excuse me?"the suited man asked in a tenor two voice.
Levi spun around with his hand inside his ski jacket, watching the man intently.
"Who are you? What do you want?" Levi said, never losing sight of the man's hands.
"I...I was sent here to deliver a message to the owner of this farm, uh...Mr. Levi..."
Before the man in the suit could continue, Levi responded,"Yes, that would be me."
"Well," The man in the suit said,"I was ordered to give you this."
The man holds up a suitcase handcuffed to him. Levi looks at him for a second, thinks, then speaks.
"Come on in..."
