Everyone has their own mysteries, whether they are curious about an idea or object. It could even possibly be themselves that is the mystery. For me, it is a house across my street that everyone has told me not to go near. Although, my curiosity had gotten the best of me one day and I went over and looked through the fence to the old house
"Boo!"
"Ahh!" I jumped turning around. I unfortunately came face to face with my neighbor which of whom I have hated since he came into our neighborhood. I looked at his laughing state with an uninterested stare. "Ha ha very funny. Don't you have to be a pest somewhere else?"
He stopped his laughter and looked down at me, damn my shortness. "I could, but you already fit that description." I grumbled and looked back at the house. "Don't tell me you're actually interested this old, creepy house."
"Are you scared?" I asked in a taunting voice.
"Pfft... uh...no." Jared said fidgeting a little with his feet.
I narrowed my eyes at him. "You hesitated."
"No, I did not, and I am not scared."
I thought for a moment, this could be my opportunity to go in that house and see why our neighborhood is so frightened of it and why everyone has always called it the ghost house. "Alright, so you are not scared then prove it." I smirked. I examined his face as he looked up at the house. I could tell by his expressions changing as he slowly, but surely realized what I was supposedly implying. His eyes widened and looked over at me.
"Ooh, no. no. I am not going in there. You do whatever you want." He started to walk away from me and in the direction towards our houses, so I mocked a huff to get his attention back on me.
"Oh well I guess you are not brave enough to go in the scary house, but it's your reputation. Maybe you do mind being called the scaredy cat at school when I tell everyone."
"Alright, fine. I will go in there, but you need to go in with me as well."
"Okay, if you say so. Tonight we will meet here and go in together."
"It's a deal" we shook hands quickly as we turned and ran off to our own houses.
That night I had packed up a few extra necessities such as a flashlight and my phone. I was just about to head out the window in between my bed and dresser, when I suddenly heard a knock on my door. "Katherine, honey, are you alright? You've been in your room all night." my mother had said softly through the oak door.
"yeah I'm fine, I...just need to go to bed early. Sooo...goodnight." I heard her sigh and maybe some sort of mumble to herself that had sounded a lot like 'stupid teenagers'. I rolled my eyes at that. Hey don't blame me, you wanted children.
"Alright, goodnight." I listened closely for her fading footsteps. Once they were gone and about a minute more of waiting I jumped out of my bedroom window and made a beeline to the house.
When I made it there Jared was already waiting. He noticed I was finally walking up and looked at me annoyingly. "Where the hell have you been?"
"Sorry I got caught up on a few things -"
"Whatever we need to go in now before it gets light out." he said cutting me off and pushing the gate slightly open so we could slip in. I looked at his retreating back growling quietly. I swear if I don't kill him by the end of the night it will be a miracle.
I followed him hurriedly looking around the yard and noticing that it looks like no one has been here for over 100 years. I was so entranced by the old lawn decor that I did not see where I was going and ran into Jared's back.
"Oof, would you watch where you are going?"
I didn't think it was even worth replying to him, so I moved passed him and went up the creaky stairs with him following. I knocked on the door making paint chips come off of my hands. I heard a slight chuckle behind me and I turned to face him. "What?"
"Only you would knock on a house that has been deserted for over 50 years." he brushed passed me and abruptly pushed the door open.
"I was only trying to be polite." I mumbled and walked in. I looked around and saw that all the furniture were covered in dust. "If this is an abandoned house, why wouldn't the furniture be wrapped in plastic, if anything?"
"Maybe, everyone was just too afraid to come in here." Jared went into another room and I went to get a closer look at the decor and furniture. I knew Jared was probably trying to sooth my nerves, but the whole sitting area and entrance looked like it was exactly the way it did when it was abandoned. Like...like whoever lived here was in a hurry to leave.
"kat!"
I whipped my head around in the direction of his cry. "Jared?!" I ran towards the room and stopped dead in my tracks. Jared was nowhere to be seen. "Jared? Jared?!"
"kat!" I looked towards the source and saw that he was in some sort of cage. I ran over to him and tried to figure out how to get him out. "kat look out!" I turned around, but it was too late. All I saw was black.
"We interrupt this program for a missing person's report. Last night two teenagers with the names of Jared Williams and Katherine White have gone missing from their homes. Police cannot seem to find any evidence on where or why they have disappeared. Please stay tuned for more information on this tragic event."
