11 millennia ago...

My dagger plunged through the heart of an enemy soldier, blood spurting upon my royal-blue armor. I chinked my blade out of his breast and sliced it at another, chanting a spell. A ball of mauve fire showered on a hooded foe. He went down, the flames licking his armor. I had just spun around to finish off another, when something swept me off my feet. A demented-looking member of the Inderage army who looked thinner and taller than most of his kind, with pale skin, sooty black hair and eyes, and a wiry build. He crushed my windpipe in one swift movement, raising a wicked metal blade. My lungs seized the air violently as I groped for my dagger.

The boot of the evil wizard felt like a dead weight against my chest as I gasped, struggling. Dizziness coursed like fire through my head, my heart pounding against my ribs, blood roaring in my ears. The Inderage nicked my arm with his blade, and I felt the hot sticky blood pool upon my arm as my fingers desperately groped for my weapon. Is this it? Is this the end? I fought the blackness, nausea flooding my head as my fist closed on air. Never! A true warrior doesn't cower from his destiny.

My fingers desperately scuffed the earth. My stomach churned and my brain ached, my lungs screaming for every inch of breath. My heart rammed against my throat and a soft muzzy blackness oozed slowly down over my eyes. I fought the blackness, gasping as my chest constricted with each breath. Help! I screeched in my head, an unnatural warmth spreading like fire through my body. Lightning crackled in the dark sky, and a heavy rain descended upon the fighting warriors. Nausea flooded my head again and a burning sensation filled my lungs. My heart drummed against my dry throat, while the rest of the world blurred, my senses losing focus. Eyes watering, gasping for breath, my fingers searching...searching...

My breath came in ragged gasps now, and it took all of my strength to fight the dizzying blackness as the Inderage went for the final blow, swinging up his blade. Yes! My heart surged as my fingers found the cold hilt of my dagger. I ignored my stomach, which was, unlike my fiery body, paralyzed with numbing cold. With all the strength I could muster, I sliced hard at the Inderage's chest just as the blade swung toward me. I could see every detail of the curved sharpness and bloodstained black edge as it spiked nearer and nearer my vision, my arm thrusting in slow motion at his heart.

The strange heat burned, the world stopped spinning, the crushing weight from my windpipe disappeared and I gasped for breath, panting.

I leaped to my feet woozily, grabbing my weapon from his chest in triumph. Nobody faces the Emperor of Keylamoufey without getting hurt, I thought smugly, eyeing the dead Inderage. His eyes had glazed over and he slumped pathetically next to the raging battlefield, so that it was impossible to know that the man had just very nearly murdered the emperor.

I whipped around and with a thrill, continued to fight. I blocked the Inderage's next move while his rapier thrust at my heart. Then he looked toward the distant horizon and gasped, fear flooding his evil gray eyes. What would someone as big and as strong as him be afraid of? I eyed the man's sturdy build and quickly slashed his arm, then squinted at the horizon.Oh, no. No, this cannot be happening. This is worse than bad. A knot twisted through my stomach, growing tighter and tighter as I watched a pack of wolves scramble swiftly toward us.

Long gleaming yellow razor-sharp fangs. Demonic scarlet pupils. Long curved claws that gleamed in the sunlight. No! It can't be! Not--

"Mierras!" A shriek pierced the air as the snarling shapeshifter wolves swarmed towards the his people. "No! Maliku!" I couldn't think as one of the mierra bared it's fangs at the beautiful blonde-haired warrior. As I flew at the stunning youth, a muscled jet-black blur attacked me in a swift swipe of fur and claws. No! MIantiel! Nooooooo!

I watched in horror--the diamond-crusted ruby-studded locket that could save and destroy the world--was ripped from my neck by the mierras, who held up the source of the elemental lockets' power in triumph. I threw off the Mierra that had held me down and bolted for Miantiel.

Everything seemed to slow down as I raced for the locket. I had never been a runner, but I was fast. But it seemed like the mierras were faster. One shapeshifter wolf transformed into one of my former dragon-racers, raising on its hind legs to look like a human. Another morphed into Maliku, her long blonde hair trailing in the wind. A third changed into my brother, who lay slaughtered by Kuraro, the mierra king. One transformed into the elf king, another took the shape of my old friend, Diandra, and the rest transformed into Mickey, Ricky and Jicky, the castle dwarf triplets. It wasn't time to grieve over the lost ones. Everybody knew that mierras could only transform into people they willingly took or killed. But my heart still caught in my throat when the mierra who had killed Maliku grinned mischievously, her baby blue eyes gleaming coldly in the dawn light.

I raced for the locket, still woozy from the attack by the Inderage who had almost killed me. My lungs screamed for air.I have to do this. The fate of Keylamoufey rests in my hands. I have to do this. The fate of Keylamoufey rests in my hands. I repeated it over and over in my head, drawing courage from those words.

Mahagony loomed over it, devil blue eyes hard and cold, towering and formidable.

The mierra who had Miantiel and I raced forward, one to deliver the now incriminating talisman, and I to reach it before he did.

I put on an extra spurt of speed and finally reached the one who had Miantiel.

I lunged and grabbed it from his claws and rolled, holding the talisman up high. The locket gleamed as if saying, "Thank you Yolcrest, I couldn't have saved the world without you." Colorful sparks whizzed from the locket, violet, green, white, and muave, a bright splash against the outcrop of warriors. The colors sent a powerful boom across the battlefield, and I collapsed on the ground.

The mierras howled, one by one, to the darkening sky, the bloodcurdling, bone-chilling sound vibrating my bones. The creatures disappeared into the woods. The Inderage crumpled to ashes and the survivors fled.

Mahagony, the enemy's leader, vanished into the night. All was safe. All was well. The dawn of a new era could begin.
