This story is about how my sad life took a great turn, then a bad one, then a better one again, and then yet another bad turn. Since fourth grade, everyone has called me "Ugly Coconut". That's because I am bald, ugly, and look like a coconut. Ever since then, I have been bullied for the way I look.
Until the girl from the Caribbean came along.
She was beautiful, with black hair pulled into a ponytail and mysterious dark brown eyes. Her skin was dark tan and as smooth as glass. I instantly instantly fell for her. I was lucky that she was in all of my classes. On the first day of high school, she walked into Math class. There were ten minutes before class started, and a few people were already in the classroom. As the girl put her backpack down next to her desk, I walked over to her.
"Hi, I'm Aaron. What's your name?" I asked her, expecting her to look up, cringe, and look back down at her backpack. Instead, she looked up, smiled, and said,
"I'm Alexandria. Nice to meet you!" I was very surprised that she didn't back away at the sight of me.
"I noticed that we have all of our classes together, and was wondering if you might want to be friends?" I said. Alexandria seemed to like that idea, and agreed to be my friend. Then, the bell rang, and everyone returned to their seats.
"Alright class, since today is the first day of your junior year in high school, you probably know most of each other. So, we will be talking about the basics of algebra." The teacher said. The whole class groaned and flipped open their math books.
After the long Math period, Alexandria and I walked to their next class, English. We were talking about our favorite musicals until one of the kids from my fifth grade class walked by.
"Hey, Ugly Coconut Man! I didn't know that you went here." He said to me as he walked past him.
"Excuse me, what did you just call my best friend?" Alexandria demanded. I could see the fight in her eyes as the kid started to laugh at her.
"Are you trying to threaten me? You look like an angry puppy!" He retorted. Alexandria rolled up her sleeves and lunged towards him, but I held her back.
"Not now, Alex. Mr. Whatever your name is, we'll come back to this," I told the guy as
Alexandria struggled to jump out of my grasp. I practically dragged her to English class. When we finally got to the classroom, I could tell that I was going to like this teacher. She smiled at everyone who walked through the door, even if they were dragging their friends in with them. She had this aura around her that just seemed to calm everyone down, and it seemed to work on Alexandria, too. We sat in our seats in the back of the classroom.
"Hey Aaron?" Alexandria said.
"Yea?" I answered.
"You called me Alex back at the math classroom when we ran into that bully. Did that just pop into your head?" She asked me.
"Well, I used to have a friend named Alexander, and I called him Alex. We were really good friends all the way through middle school, but the summer before ninth grade, he-" I stopped. I couldn't bring myself to say the words died in a car crash.
"What? What happened to him?" Alexandria softly asked me. I took a shaky breath.
"He...he died in car crash," I whispered, trying to hide my tears. Then, Alexandria did the unexpected. She leaned over and hugged me.
"You can call me Alex," She muttered into my ear. I nodded, and English class started.
