This is my first fanfiction on this page. So please be kind. Any requests for more ships just let me know.
The barrier islands of the southern United States is the place I call home, yet it isn't much of a home. When the Omnic War started, the army turned these hand full of islands into refugee camps, where people from all over came to get away from the war. After the war ended, the people who came seemed to just stay. Given some had nowhere to go, but the ones that did seemed to stay longer then was necessary, and some even now still linger in the ruins of this place.
The army had moved in, and made themselves at home less then a year after the war. Turning our home into a military state, which didn't help the inhabitance of this broken land.
'No weapons. No violence. Peace for all.' The bullshit words that were plastered all over. The only people with no weapons seemed to be the normal people. Yet, some of us found a way around the laws that were shoved down our throats.
Although, this isn't where my story starts....
A ray of sunlight shined in my room through a crack in the wall of abandoned apartment building that I had decided to call home for the past three months. Rolling over onto my side, I shoved my face into my arm, trying to get a few more hours of rest. Until I remembered what day it was. March 16.
"God Dammit," I yelled as I threw my blanket to the side, and rolled out of bed. Jumping up and almost diving into a pile of cloths next to my bed, I pulled out a pair of shorts and a (f/c) tank top. Quickly, I pulled them on and darted toward the door, grabbing my duffel bag and headphones on the way out. Making my way down the stairs and out to the street, I could hear cheering a few blocks away.
"Fuck...Gabriel is going to kill me if I'm late for this," I said to myself as I rubbed my forehead. Breaking into a fast jog, it only took a few minuets before I could see the crowd of people. I looked over and caught a glimpse of myself in a broken window. My hair was pulled back and I looked like shit. Making my way up to the crowd, I had to jump to try and see over the swarm of people. "Where is he?," I said as I began making my way into the crowd. Slipping around people easily.
"Here come the new recruits!," someone in front of me called out. Pushing the rest of the way to the front, I looked for my team, and like always, they were right in front. I let out a sigh when I caught sight of Gabriel, who was walking with an upset look on his face. 'Shit he is pissed,' I thought as I dunked down until the recruits had made their way to me. I looked around for the guards that were stationed there to keep the crowd back. '1, 2, 3, guards- no wait 5.' watching them all I waited for when they were all looking the other way to make my move.
"Now," I said as I quickly made my way out of the crowd and into the group of recruits. A silent high five to me, and I walked up and stood by Gabriel. It took him no time to realize I was there as he put his large hand on top of my head. He turned me so that I could still walk ,but looked up at him. His brown hair was pushed down and his face was cleaner then normal. Pulling the sweetest smile I could muster, I tried to play down the fact that I was this late...Again.
"Heeeey, Gabe. I see you cleaned up," I said slowly not to try to anger him anymore. The grip on my head got a little harder.
"(Y/n). I swear to god. The one day you had to be on time," Gabriel spoke through gritted teeth. I was used to him acting like a grumpy older brother, yet I never liked it.
The march came to a stop before I could answer him. We all stood at attention as our recruiter paced above us on a platform. Seeming visibly impatient as always. Then it happened. A woman's voice rang out loud over the cheering crowd, "It's the heroes!" It felt like my throat fell into my stomach, but I wanted to see them. When I went to turn around to see them I was halted by a hand on my head again.
I turned to face Gabriel to get my two cents in, but was stifled by the hardest look I'd ever seen on his face. With as sigh, I gave in and faced forward. The cheering had become louder, making speech with our group impossible anyways.
Moments later I heard a few voices behind us, and I knew who was talking. It was Tracer! She was greeting people in the crowd with her bubbly personality we all knew.
"Cheers love!," her voice rang in my ears, "Nice to meet you!" The voices were getting louder as the moved closer to the stage we were standing in front of. Within a few seconds, it sounded as if they were right behind us. Goosebumps ran up my spine and I couldn't stop my hands from shaking. Was I nervous? Or scared of what was going to happen next? My mind took control of itself as I saw Tracer climbing the steps of the stage.
My breath became shaky and my heart dropped, as I saw the hero for the first time in person. She was being followed by other heroes. They climbed on stage in this order; Tracer, Winston, McCree, Genji, Mercy, D.va, Zarya, and one more. I shook my head at the fact that I had no idea who the last hero to join the stage was. He was tall, a bit on the scrawny side and his hair was on fire. 'Wait, why is his hair on fire!'
My mind and body was snapped to attention as I heard my recruiter address our group. "Recruits! At attention," with his voice blaring around us we all stood straight and placed our hands behind our backs.
"Today is the day you've all been training so hard these past six months for," his voice was calm but still demanded your attention. "These Overwatch heroes standing behind me have come for one reason and one reason alone. They have selected three of you, to fight beside them. It is the greatest honer that any person can ask to have." I watched him speak so intently. 'Only three.....shit. I wasn't even in the top ten. This is gonna be bad,' I thought to myself.
"Now we will name the three lucky recruits that will be packing their bags and heading out today," our recruiter spoke and my stomach dropped. The feeling of dread filling my body as he pulled out a piece of paper, that I assumed was the recruit list.
"Here are the names of the three recruits," he spoke as I began to shake with anticipation. "First, Donovan Bringler," a recruit from the back of the group walked up and stood before the group. "Next, Gabriel Denazen." My eyes shot over to my best friend, standing beside me. His face held no emotion as he made his way to the front. I watched him walk all the way up and stand before the heroes. I let out a large breath as I walked my friend from childhood walk away from me. Closing my eyes, I now just wanted this whole ordeal to be over and done with.
"And lastly, (Y/fn) (y/ln)," my eyes shot open. 'D-did he just say my name,' I slowly looked up at the heroes. Forcing my body to move, I walked past the few people that were in front of me and stood beside Gabriel. My whole body was frozen as I stood before my heroes.
"These are our newest members of Overwatch," he said as he gestured with his hand toward us. The crowd cheered but I couldn't hear anything. My head was spinning and it felt as if I would be pushed over by the slightest breeze. I had made it into overwatch....
