PROLOGUE
Her heart was racing, and tears were streaming down her face. He was banging on the door, demanding she let him in. This was not the holiday she had wished for. In fact, she wished at this moment that she had not said yes. That she had not agreed to marry this monster. But now she was trapped forever between those four walls, there was no window, and no way out.
She had always known from the beginning that something was off. But love is blind so she chose to ignore it. She let her concerns go, she decided she was paranoid and let it go. He hadn't always been like this. He was once a seemingly caring, gentle guy. Everyone saw him as that. Even his family. There was a sinister side that no one had seen. He was long broken inside. But nobody saw it.
CHAPTER 1
Westford estate was always such a quiet town. People kept themselves to themselves, yet were friendly to everyone. Friendly enough. There had never been a lot of crime there. Well, not that anyone cared to discuss. Everyone really did keep their business their own.
Today was as normal a day as any for Ella Hartley. She got up, had her shower, had her usual breakfast of eggs on toast, checked the time and rushed to work. At least that's what I saw from my car. She was beautiful. I never understood why she degraded herself. Unfortunately, it's so common in this day and age. I left for work shortly after Ella.
As I arrived at work, the familiar ear-ringing silence and distinct chemical smell of the emergency room hit my senses. If you listened carefully, you could hear the cries of newborns in maternity and the occasional giggle in the children's ward a few halls away. I wondered if Ella took comfort in the familiarities of her workplace like I did. It's hard to imagine being a high school art teacher. Secondary students are so difficult. God, did I respect her for it. But I suppose her pupils adore her. She's one of those people that are hard to dislike. I, on the other hand, seem to fire up teenagers. I suppose their doctor never would be their favourite person though. Ella is fun and creative, her eyes smile when she laughs. I have a stern face. My stress spreads across it. We are both in our 30's but I look something of a 45 year old and she has younger features. She could easily pass for 23.
Lost deep in thought as I entered the building and walked through to the staff room, I had missed it. As I took a breath in and got ready to start my shift, I realised that something was off.
