It's Friday and we have decided for a night out. Around 10 p.m. I joined Sarah and Richard at Fitzold, the bar where we normally hang out. After an hour of drinking beer, it's clear we're in the drunk-talk stage of the night. We've been mostly discussing the classes we're about to start, the teachers and some unpleasant classmates we'll have to see. One of those unpleasant classmates is Greg, a tall nerdy guy with black hair and round glasses like Harry Potter. He's too arrogant and seems to think he's better than everyone else. For some reason, he has something against Richard. I suspect it is related to Sarah, so I start teasing them.

-"Seriously guys, I think he's frustrated because you are always near you" I point to Richard first, and next to Sarah.

-"Oh, shut up Ems!" Sarah says, blushing, while Richard burst out laughing.

-"Trust me! I have great instincts for this kind of things. He probably has a crush on you, Sarah, but Ricky here is always glued to you... He probably thinks you two have a thing, and he can't help but to be upset whenever you speak to him." I say between laughs, while shifting my eyes from Sarah to Richard.

The teasing lasted a little while longer, while we drank another round of beers and tequila shots. Richard was very amused with the conversation, unlike Sarah, who kept asking us to 'stop with the nonsense'. I think she has a crush on Greg too. The way she blushes and always tries to change the subject when I start speaking about the little things I notice about Greg crushing on her. She keeps telling me he's too arrogant and full of himself. Despite his nerdy looks, she compares him to one of the popular guys in her high school that used to make fun of her and her friends.

That was something he all had in common: in high school, and today still (to some extent), we were all little computer nerds, mostly in the eyes of sporty people. We were almost always around a computer, we wore glasses and we never took an interest in being part of any sports team. The typical nerd teenagers. But that changed after high school, for all three of us. Now, we are still around a computer most of the time since that's our future field of work; Richard always wears glasses and Sarah always uses contact lenses, while I switch between the two quite often; our conversations normally revolve around our classes, our favorite movies and tv shows and our favorite games, but not always. We talk about various topics, from science, to politics, to movies, to sex, even to sports. Of course, it wasn't like that at first, but I'm happy we are able to talk about everything now, without embarrassment or shyness.

I also like sports, and so does Richard. Sarah not so much, but she makes an effort to watch soccer and football games with us. None of us played one in our past, but it's mainly because we didn't want to be part of a team where most of the participants were the people we despised.

Right now, it's almost midnight and the drinks stopped coming, but the conversation keeps going. Some of our classmates joined us at our booth for a while and then disappeared to the dance track. Richard followed them, but returned quickly with a defeating look.

-"I'm too drunk to dance, too much to Kaylah despair." He says while leaning back in his seat. His being trying to ask Kaylah for a while now, but apparently only finds courage to interact with her while drunk. Today he's too wasted to make a move that wouldn't make him look like a fool.

-"Sober you doesn't dance either." Sarah mumbles and I nod.

-"Shut up. Hey, want to go get something to eat? You girls look like you reaaally need it." Richard tries to convince us he's thinking about our wellbeing, but we both know that food is the best way for him to stop feeling so drunk.

We leave Fitzold and head to a diner nearby. We ordered too much food, but Richard made sure nothing would be left behind. After talking about the most random things for 30 minutes we get up to go home. Because Richard is feeling a little indisposed *ahem* drunk *ahem*, Sarah takes him outside while I go pay for dinner.

-"Excuse me, can I pay th....oh god, sorry." There were a couple people standing near the counter, making orders, paying and/or eating, and as I was trying to get the waitress's attention, waving the check and finding my way to the register machine, I bump into a girl, who was doing the same. "I didn't mean to be so eager to pay that I would bump into everyone around me."

-"Not everyone. I think it was just me. That's okay." Her mouth curved into a smile and she patted my shoulder in a reassuring way. She turned to the waitress who decided to pay us attention, but I didn't even notice because I was still staring at the blonde girl. She talked to the waitress. "We were just fighting for your attention here. I think you're gonna have to choose which one of us pays first."

Wow. Is she flirting with the waitress to be the first?

I shift my eyes from the blonde girl, who just winked at the waitress and keeps a wide smile on her face, and the waitress who just blushed and smiled back.

-"I'm sorry, but my friend is outside waiting for me. He's a little too drunk so, if you could speed up this part it would be great. Doesn't really matter who's first, as long as I don't have to battle again to pay the check". I interrupt their interaction, smiling politely and with puppy eyes. Well, my attempt at puppy eyes.

I pay first, and as I'm putting my change in my wallet, I hear the blonde girl.

-"I didn't know this was a battle! Although you did try to tackle me..."

I can't help but smile and right before I walk way, I apologize to her. I did bump into her. She was already leaning on the counter and I was able to pay first. In my defense, I didn't actively try to take her turn, it just happened. I guess her pretty smile was not as effective as my puppy eyes.

-"Why are you smiling, Ems?" Sarah asks me as I reach them outside the diner.

-"No reason, I just won a contest back there." I tell her, feeling victorious. She snorts while gesturing me to explain myself. "This girl wanted to pay, and I wanted to pay. She tried to wink and smile her way into paying first, but I did my puppy eyes and won.". Both Sarah and Richard laugh while I keep a victorious grin on my face.

A cab drives us home while we have a contest of puppy eyes, where the cab driver was the judge. He didn't choose a winner though, and said we were all terrible. I am dropped first in my apartment and I say goodbye to my friends.

I lay in bed and as Iclose my eyes, I replay my interaction with that blonde girl in my head. Thecorners of my mouth lift just by thinking about her smiling.

I wouldn't letyou pay first either, so I could look at it a little while longer... Wait, what?Emma? What...

When I open my eyes, my thoughts are interrupted by the awfuldizziness. I groan, turn sideways and push myself to sleep before the roomstarts spinning uncontrollably.
