An Alibi of Blood

Start from the beginning

I didn't take it. Turning around, I walked in front of him, choosing to lead. I could hear a chuckle behind me as Tom Riddle caught up with me in long strides; his blue eyes studying me carefully. "Why so difficult, Robins?" he asked, "is it the mock NEWTS coming up? Or perhaps, it is the fact that your friends left for their eminent death?" I didn't reply, choosing to ignore, as I sidestepped his remarks. Taunting. He was taunting me. "Whatever is going on, you can tell me, Robins--" he said, "there is no one else listening, that I can promise--" he murmured.

I stopped in my tracks and turned around, fighting to keep calm. "Promise?" I asked, "and what exactly is the promise of a murderer worth?" the words spilled from my mouth, "give me one reason to trust you, Tom Riddle, but before that, I will be damned if I give you anything."

He cocked his head to the side. "Sentiment," he said suddenly.

I looked up at him. "What?"

"Sentiment, Robins," he said impatiently, "I don't have a single grain of it, so you know that you can trust me."

I laughed incredulously. "And what does that prove? Only a person with sentiment can be worth anything with a promise. You are a cold-blooded killer, Riddle, what does sentiment mean to you?"

He laughed coldly. "It doesn't mean anything to me at all--" he stepped closer; his height making him intimidating as he closed the space between us, "--but it does to you. I challenge you as much as you do to me, Robins, and I know that your precious little friends are so weak hearted that they will never understand the secrets that you have. They may pretend that they are compassionate," his voice became darker, "but no one will understand you; no one will understand the darkness in your heart. No one but me--" his breath fanned on my neck.

I suppressed the urge to shudder. "I am not a villain," I whispered.

"But I am," he answered, "I'm the monster that hides underneath beds; I'm the cold blooded murderer who kills without remorse. I am the monster that can't love," he hissed, his eyes suddenly gleaming red, "and you made the mistake of falling for me."

I looked up this time. And this time, I reacted. I didn't slap him. I punched Tom Riddle-- the prefect and dangerous wizard straight in the face.

I caught him off guard. I had never acted this violent to him, not until now. Durmstrang had taught me many moves. I bowled him over, using the element of surprise; wrestling him to the grass so that he landed on his back, winded. "You actually thought I would fall for you?" I asked, gritting my teeth as he tried to escape my grip while I tried to avoid getting punched, "I might be a crazy prankster, but don't assume I'm into a bastard like you!" Tom unexpectedly grabbed me by the collar; flipping me over with ease; my head slamming into the ground as he straddled me.

He smirked, "Are you sure about that?" he asked, "that particular redness in your cheeks says otherwise."

"That particular redness in my cheeks is embarrassment at your stupidity!" I snarled and without hesitation, I bit him in his exposed arm; making him wince as I used the momentum to flip him over again; this time; pinning him down successfully. But he had already spoken.

"I don't base my suspicions without evidence, Robins," he said, "the Yule Ball; don't you remember?" The image of him kissing my hand returned, my eyes burning. His eyes gleamed. "I took your pulse. And your heart seemed to be beating quite....swiftly..."

I looked down at him sharply. "And because my pulse was elevated, you thought that I was falling for you?" I asked, "maybe the 'P' in your prefect badge stands for 'Prat.'"

He smiled thinly. "Then prove me otherwise," he challenged.

I fought off a smile as I lowered my head; my red curls creating a curtain around our faces-- our lips an inch apart. I popped the button on his collar; as I lowered my face closer to his. "You might be handsome, you might be charismatic, smart, and cunning, but don't mistaken me for someone who is taken so easily into your manipulative charms like the rest of your puppets. Whether I feel something for you or not, I will never stop trying to beat you and I will never stop hating you. I will always stand in your way and don't you forget it. If you consider yourself the Romeo in our little "love story" then I'm the poison that will kill you."

I breathed heavily, panting from the force behind the words, as I stared into Tom Riddle's face. Those blue eyes were no longer smirking; no longer empty. I could see a flicker of something resembling respect, no matter how twisted it looked. "I always win the game," he said softly and dangerously.

I cocked my head to the side, our roles now reversed as I smirked as dangerous as his smile. "Then prepare to lose, Riddle," I said as I turned away; my eyes not betraying me even once as I made the way back to Hogwarts.
