'Who're you going to believe? That little liar that you've barely known for ten years or me who you've known almost your entire life?' the older of the two girls asked. The man looked between them, anguished.

Already knowing what his choice would be, the younger girl gave him a sad smile.

'I'm sorry.' he told her, knowing she understood.

'It's okay. Friends come first.'

'You're my friend too.'

'You've known her longer.'

'But you know me better.'

'Which is why I understand.' The sad smile and unshed tears broke his heart but there was nothing he could do.

He turned to the girl who'd just forced him to make the hardest decision of his life. 'You're right.' he told her, trying to ignore the presence of the girl stood behind him. He received a triumphant grin in response to his words but he couldn't even manage to school his features into a neutral expression.

As he heard the sound of the door shutting and felt the absence of the familiar, comforting presence, the tears spilled over.
