I was never the type of person who could dance in the rain after it stormed. My soul was like the wind that made up the storm clouds and then would gather in the sky after it had poured. I was always drifting and never have I ever been disappointed with the places I had ended up in until one day the wind had blew me all the way to Mexico.
9 MONTHS EARLIER
The sun was beating down on my chest and I tiredly wiped my forehead in exhaustion. This was our fourth day in Mexico and honestly I have no idea how I survived it. It was hot and my skin felt clammy. The sun was too bright, there was way too many people, and worst of all I had no idea what the hell they were saying.
"Christiana will you kindly translate what this young woman is saying please?" Mr Guzman asked politely motioning towards the girl standing next to him.
Christina shifted back and forth to one foot and back to the other. She craned her head to the left looking at Lily and me for help but we merely lifted our thumbs and gave her and encouraging smile. She seemed to deflate at our response but put forth a smile anyways.
"Could you repeat what you said once more?" She questioned slowly hoping the woman would catch on.
It would seem the odds were in Christians favor because the woman gave a nod and outstretched her hand pointing it to herself as she spoke, "Me llama es Charlotte. Y tu?"
Christiana looked at Charlotte for a long moment before turning to Mr. Guzman and responded shamelessly, "I have no idea what she just said."
Her confession sent all of us on edge.
"Christiana are you serious right now? This is something you should of learned the first week of school!" He exclaimed annoyed.
She tilted her head to the side and nodded in agreement, "But to be fair Mr. Guzman you weren't our teacher then. The Spanish teacher before you could barley speak English let alone her own language." She defended.
I rolled my eyes and walked over to Lily. This was something that would never get old.
"Well apparently she knew enough because Lily and Elizabeth knew exactly what she was saying right girls?"
Both Lily and I stopped dead in our tracks. Head hung low we both reluctantly turned towards them.
"Well umm I believe she said my name is Charlotte." Lily answered unsure of her response.
"You don't sound too confident in your answer." Mr.Guzman observed.
"That's because she's not. Christina is right our teacher before was hard to read. The whole class was failing." I explained stepping forward.
Charlotte had long ago departed from our little group and was slowly replaced with my classmates.
He shook his head with disappointment, and slowly motioned everyone towards the bus that was parked a few blocks down. I felt a stinging sensation blossom within my chest at his reaction. It was a feeling only one got when they know they have let a person down. Guilt flooded me and it was a force that I have never experienced before.
"You know I'm glad you girls do your work and stride to get good grades in my class, but all the knowledge that I am passing down to you will mean nothing if you don't apply it to your daily lives. I believe in you just like I believe in everyone else in my class, but I expected so much more from the three of you. After all this was your idea..." He mumbled looking at us with a run down expression.
As soon as his back turned I felt my face flush red with embarrassment. I felt like a loser but worst of all I felt like a failure, but it would seem that his words didn't just affect me. Lily's face was full of wavering emotions and Christian's was casted with a blanket of shadows. Nothing could be seen on her face unlike Lily who seemed to be feeling them all at once. After a long moment Christina took a long stride back and walked away. Both me and Lily watched as she disappeared into the crowd, and inwardly debated whether to give chase or stay put, but she was too far gone now to even consider hollering her name to grab her attention. So we both caved in and climbed onto the bus with heavy hearts.
It seems stupid to be so upset about a scowling from a teacher, but Mr. Guzman has done nothing but work hard to teach us the rules of Spanish and there we were breaking every single one of them like we didn't care. But we did - some more than others...
Christina stills had not returned and now that I think about it Shay was still missing too.
The bus had started running and I felt a pang of worry seep into my heart.
What if they got left behind?
It was a dumb question but a legitament one all the same.
I felt Lily shift beside me and watched as she slid down the seat with a mischievous look plastered on her face. She crawled on the floor and when she felt no one was looking she moved down a row and then another and then another till she was all the way in the back. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion and silently followed her. I softly placed my hand on her shoulder as soon as her fingers latched onto the hadle of the emergency door that was located at the very back of the bus.
"What are you doing?" I hissed quietly.
I felt a slight tug on my body and realized the bus had started moving. Dread filled me as Lily struggled to unlock the door.
"Lily stop we are going to get in trouble! "My voice was barley a whisper now.
"Ellie, Christiana is still not on the bus and I if I don't open this door right now Shay is going to be left behind!" She yelled desperately.
My eyes widened as I jerked forward towards the window. Lily was right. Shay was only a few inches away from the bus struggling to catch up to us.
"We have to tell-"
"Too late." She said and then the door flew open.
Unconsciously I lean forward testing my boundaries when suddenly I felt a hard shove toss me out the door. Midair I turned my head and watched as Lily smiled wickedly at me. Contorted with shock and anger I flick my middle finger at her and yell "FUCK YOU!" As I tumbled to the floor.
I heard her laugh crazily as she jumped down next to me and waved at the bus.
I forced myself up and instant doubt filled me. They wouldn't leave right? I mean who wouldn't notice the emergency door was open? But the bus kept driving and as it disappeared into the distance I knew the answer to my question.
