"I don't know Dean, you sure it's gonna work?" Bobby adjusted his old hat.
"We have to try Bobby," tears began forming in Dean's eyes, "It's Sammy we're talking about here, we can't just stay and do nothing." It was the Apocalypse. Sammy had said yes to Lucifer, making him a vessel. Unfortunately, Sam wasn't strong enough to take back control of his body. It has been months since then, months of terror, months of death. Now, Dean was gonna go after Lucifer and stop the Apocalypse if it was the last thing he'd do.
In his hand, he held the sharpened archangel blade, studying it. Will today be the day I kill the Devil? If so, it'll also be the day I kill my brother. He closed his eyes for a moment, memories of his beloved Sammy overflowing his mind. He opened them to see Castiel's sharp blue eyes staring back at him.
"Dean-" He was cut off with a tight hug. Castiel stood still for a second until he began to melt away into Dean's arms. After a couple of moments, Dean took a step back, looking at Cas with tears slowly making their way down his cheek.
"Dean, I'm weaker than I thought, heaven is nearly destroyed, much like most of the world." Castiel face was lined and tired. He looked as if he could faint any second. Dean's stomach was doing back flips inside of him. He glanced down at his watch. Six o'clock. It was time to go. Bobby wheeled out from behind the ancient wooden desk towards the two boys.
"Well, I guess this a goodbye," Bobby's droopy eyes were weighed down with grief.
"No, dammit, it's not goodbye. I'll see you later." With a sad smile, Dean gave a tight squeeze to Bobby.
Dean turned back to Cas, "You ready?"
"Yes," Cas stretched that word out as if he would never use it again. At the same time, the two men turned to the door and exited the house. They each had doubts, so many of them, but they pushed them out of their mind as they entered the 67 Chevy Impala.
"It's gonna be about 3 hours until we get to Lawrence so hang in there."
Dean put the car in drive and sped away into the sunset.
Cas pressed his forehead against the coolness of the window. He knew he wouldn't win this fight, Dean may have a chance but he didn't.
Ahh... Dean. Cas had hoped Dean could live a full life, even if it was without him.
Thoughts rushed through Dean's head, making it hard for him to concentrate on driving. If he couldn't have his brother back, the only person he would have left is Cas. That is if they didn't both die today.
Dark clouds rolled in the sky angrily. The heavy wind rushed passed them. It was whispering in Dean's ear, turn back! Danger! Danger! Turn back! One hand was on the steering wheel and the other was resting beside him. Slowly, edging a little closer, Cas reached out his hand and rested it on Dean's. At first, he tensed up but begin to relax. The quiet tune of Led Zeppelin's Over the Hills and Far Away poured out of the old car radio as they drove away into the night.
* * *
The Impala pulled into the empty parking lot right beside an ancient, ramshackle building. There wasn't a living thing in sight. Chills spread throughout Dean's body. He could feel the presence of Lucifer inside of him. He and Cas exchanged uneasy glances and got out of the vehicle.
"Where are all the demons? All his minions?"
"They're expecting us." Castiel patted the inside of his trench coat, assuring himself that the archangel blade was still in his pocket.
"Let'so go," Dean instructed. Just as they took their first step, a horrible, chilling feeling washed over them.
"Well, I wasn't expecting guest so soon! Please, make yourself at home." The familiar voice Dean had missed so much came from behind them. Sam, or rather, Lucifer stood tall and proud with a twisted grin on his face.
"Aww, I've missed you and your boyfriend so much!"
Dean's voice caught in his throat. He didn't know what to do or what to say.
"I want my brother back you son of a bitch!" Dean choked out. It hurt seeing Sam. Suddenly his face contorted from a grin to an inhuman like scowl.
"You ignorant pieces of trash think you can come here and start barking orders? Your brother is long gone." A deep laugh rolled off his tongue, "He lost our fun little fight up here." Luci tapped his finger against his head of hair.
Suddenly he turned to Castiel, tipping an imaginary hat.
"And how's heaven? Daddy still hasn't come home?"
Castiel made a nasty growl and charged toward the Devil.
"No Cas!" Dean yelled after him but it was too late. Lucifer pointed toward the asphalt in front of Castiel, "OOPS."
That was the last thing Dean remembered clearly. The rest was a blur.
A thundering sound erupted from the ground, drowning out the screams from Dean. A large hole opened up in the ground releasing a crimson glow. Suddenly a blast of heat came rushing from the opening.
Dean was able to grab Castiel's hand before he fell. Now, Cas was barely hanging onto Dean's arm, who was sprawled out on the asphalt. Both of his hands were gripping Cas.
"No! You can't leave me alone, not yet," he said through tears.
"Dean, I- I can't get back up."
'No, I'm not letting you go! "
A laughter burst from Lucifer, who was still standing in front of the pit.
"Well, that hole leads straight to Hell, so... good luck!"
With his remaining strength, Cas look his savior straight in the eye, "Dean-" he choked.
Tears streamed down his face, "Yeah Cas?"
"I love you," and with that, Castiel released Dean's hand before falling into the flames.
