Keith x reader

Smile 😊

     You had been feeling pretty down lately. You barely spoke to anyone, barely came out of your room except for missions or training and you didn't smile. Now, the team had noticed and were concerned especially the red paladin. You see, you used to be the cheerful, happy, bubbly person but not recently.

     The team (except you) were holding a meeting concerning you. "I'm really worried about Y/N." The Altean princess said with a sad expression.

     "We all are." Shiro stated. "I've tried talking to her but she won't tell me anything." Everyone nodded except Keith who was standing with his arms crossed. Even though he kept a straight face, the worry was evident in his eyes.

     "I even told her my funniest jokes but she didn't even crack a smile." Lance said.

     "Must be because your jokes aren't funny." Keith muttered but Lance still heard him.

     "What do you know about humour, Mullet?" Lance glared at Keith and Keith glared back.

     "Okay, you guys, knock it off." Shiro said. "Keith, why don't you try talking to her? She's closer to you than the rest of us."

     Keith nodded and left the room to look for Y/N. He decided to check your room considering that was where you were most of the time now.

     "Y/N? Y/N open up. It's Keith." Keith said as he knocked on your door.

    "Go away. I'm not in the mood." Your response came from the other side of the door.

     "Y/N please. We're all worried about you. I'm worried about you. Please open up. Let me help." Keith pleaded and after a moment the door opened to reveal a puffy eyed Y/N.

     You let Keith into your room and sat on the bed. Keith sat down next to you. "Y/N, what's wrong?" He asked. You stayed silent and refused to look at him. "Y/N please." Keith pleaded. You sighed.

     "It's August 14th." You paused. Keith nodded for you to go on. Y/N sighed. "Three years ago, my older brother died."

     "Y/N-" Keith started.

     "No, it's ok. I've kept this in for way too long." You paused and took in a shaky breath. "It was late at night and everyone was asleep. Then there was smoke and shouting. My door was flung open and my brother rushed in. He shoved me outside and said we had to hurry. We got outside and then I heard my puppy barking from inside the house. instinctively, I ran into the house to get him. My brother ran in after me. Suddenly, a beam fell and it would have crushed me but my brother shielded me with his body. There was an explosion and I was knocked out. When I woke up in the hospital, they told me my brother had not survived the explosion. He was...gone." Tears were streaming down your face now. Keith just stared and listened as you clenched your fists in your lap.

     "They told me it wasn't my fault but I know it is. If I hadn't been so stupid, he would still be alive." You were hiccuping now and your eyes were shut tight. Suddenly, you felt Keith wrap his arms around you. The gesture was so simple but held so much meaning that you full on started weeping. You let the tears flow freely cried into Keith's shoulder. This was the first time Keith had hugged anyone (that you knew of). Yes you had hugged him plenty of times before but he never returned the gesture, usually just ruffling your hair or patting your back. Now Keith was rubbing circles into your back, a gesture you found most calming and comforting.

     "Y/N it's not your fault. Your brother was just trying to protect you."

     "But if I hadn't gone in after my dog, he'd still be alive." I cried. Keith pulled away and looked at you straight in the eyes.

     "You were trying to save a life - a quality that made you a defender of the universe. Your brother would be proud of you." He said as he wiped away your tears.

     "Thank you Keith." You said with genuine gratitude.

     "Anytime Y/N." He said with a smile causing you to smile back. "Come on, the others are worried bout you and you need to eat." He stood up and stretched out his hand to you. You took it gently and walked out of your room together.

     When the others saw you, they all bombarded you with hugs (Hunk's was the best) and "Are you alright?"s. You nodded and Hunk made you some food to eat.

     "Hey Y/N, how do you organise a party in space?" Asked Lance

     "How?"

     "You planet!"

     You started laughing uncontrollably. "Nice one Lance." You said as you wiped away a tear.

     "See Keith, she does like my jokes!" Lance said sticking his tongue out at Keith. Keith just shook his head as he watched you laugh and have fun with the others. He was glad he saw your lovely smile again and as long as he was breathing he promised himself would make you smile always.

Hey guys! This was a little bit of a depressing way to start this book but here it is. I'm in boarding school and we are not allowed phones and wattpad is blocked so I won't be able to update as often. Anyway, Lance's joke was by Average Demon on a Voltron Amino. i hope you enjoyed this oneshot.
