Tyler is a new student at a new school and has a hard time fitting in because of various aspects: no friends being the main one because his old friend moves away before school starts. They have a party before they leave and he makes one friend, who ends up spreading a rumour. He makes more friends and eventually falls out of friendships with them and all of them have reasons.
When things get particularly difficult, Tyler starts to make confessional tapes with the reasons on them & when he records the final tape with the final reason on, he decides to kill himself, but not before delivering the tapes to person number one on the list.
Josh receives these tapes eventually, and he listens to them, which makes him paranoid and angry and everything in between because he doesn't know why he has them, until he hears *his* tape.
There's a court case going around with the issue to sue the school because they didn't stop the bullying, and Josh believes that telling the truth about the tapes will bring the trial to a close, but he receives threats from people saying they'll kill him if he does. Bur he just wants justice for his dead friend, who he could've saved.
