"And so I asked Gigi to our school's prom and she said yes!"

Deangelo's words were eagerly spilling out of his mouth as he took up more time of our Protector meeting rambling on about how happy he was that the girl he liked was going to Prom with him. I usually didn't try to look interested but I knew how much of a burden I was to the Protectors of Eclipse City, and after the meeting was over I planned to pull Deangelo aside and ask him to train me. No way was I going to let showoff Marky, careless Sissy, or ditzy Lafonda train me. Deangelo was obviously my best bet.

Besides the pressure of improving my battle skills, life was actually really good since me and my boyfriend Mark had been dating for over a month now and we had gone on dates and spent time at each other's homes getting to know each other better and I was definitely anticipating him asking me out to prom.

"So what about you nerd-wings? Going to prom with any babes?" Sissy climbed on Marky's back and elbowed his shoulder repeatedly before the big griffin shook her off.

"Um...no?" Marky gave a shy smile and Sissy's eyes lit up.

"You totally are ya liar!" Sissy cackled. "C'mon Marks, tell us who the sorry girl is!"

"First of all that's mean and next of all, I haven't asked any girl to prom. Honest." Marky replied.

"But you're going to." Sissy smirked and Marky ignored her.

"What about you LaFonda?" Sissy looked at her and LaFonda's eyes widened.

"Um...sure!" LaFonda looked like she didn't even know what we were talking about. Sissy caught on to this right away.

"So who are you going to prom with then?" Sissy asked with a smirk. "When's your school's prom?"

"School...? Um, just some person that's...nice I guess." LaFonda shyly rubbed her face with her trunk and we would've dismissed the meeting but we needed to know every Protector's prom schedule in case of another attack at our city.

"But what's the day of your prom?" I repeated Sissy's question and LaFonda looked like she was about to sink into the ground below her.

"Um...I'm actually not going..." LaFonda finally admitted.

"WHAT?!" Sissy leaped onto Marky's shoulders and then onto LaFonda's head and yanked her big ears. "When I went to prom it was the craziest and funnest night of my life and you're chosing not to go?!"

"Some people just aren't into dances Sissy." Deangelo rolled his eyes. "I mean I wouldn't have gone to a dance unless someone I liked said they'd go with me...which they did."

"Well if that's final then this meeting's dismissed." Marky announced before turning to me with big green eyes. "So ready to go?"

"I'm going to talk to Deangelo a bit, you can just go home if you want." I told him.

"Uh.....what are you going to talk about? He has a girlfriend." Marky's feathers ruffled and he touched my shoulder with his talon. "I'm just making sure your safe Ellie."

"I can stay safe on my own, thank you very much." I growled jumping off the bench and away from Marky's touch. I briefly glanced at him and his facial expression contorted as if he was deciding whether to be angry or sad. I wouldn't find out which way he felt more because when I turned around he was gone.

I called out to Deangelo before he could leave the park and he turned around to face me.

"What's up?" Deangelo asked.

"I wanted to ask if you'd help me...work on my powers." I sighed. "I hate admitting it but in the two years we've been Protectors I've done nothing but drag us down and literally got myself killed. I know I have powers but I'm not using them effectively."
