A rough beginning

It was a Tuesday morning and my manager just scheduled me to work, but also to open the shop. She called me 30 minutes ago. I work at a moderately busy coffee shop in the LA area. The shop opens at 8:30 every morning. I always schedule off for Tuesdays and Thursdays because I take classes and practice for hobbies of mine. Though I love my job, a coffee shop isn't my ideal life. I love space, I adore everything about it. But music is also a key part in my life and has been since 5th grade in elementary school. So Tuesday and Thursday, I take classes and practice to keep my love growing and hopefully continue to work towards a career in one of the two paths.

I won't go into much detail about myself. It's boring and there isn't much to talk about. I would only ramble about coffee, music, and space. But, back to the problem at hand, since I didn't know I would work, I had 30 minutes to get ready and be at work. Another problem, I walk to work. I don't have a car at the moment, I was involved in an accident a month back and the car was totaled. And though insurance helps, I don't have the money to afford a new car.

Hearing my manager break the news, I jumped out of bed and rushed to get into uniform and bolt out the door. Since I did not have time to properly get ready, I look a little rough today. The walk is about ten minutes, the shop needs to open at 8:30, and its 8:25. Seeing as I would need to be open and have everything prepared to work for the day, this is trouble. I continued to run out of my studio apartment and make my way down to the main road. I take my turns and I run trying to make it.

While running blindly to get to work, I ran into someone and knocked us both down. He doesn't look hurt at all, but falling after going so fast, I've scraped my leg and terribly hurt my ankle. I check my watch; 8:29.

"fuck" I muttered under my breath. I get up quickly and instantly fall down again, I can't hurry with an injury like this. It isn't doctor worthy, at least I don't believe. But it's bad enough to keep me from moving at an even moderate pace. I stand slowly and look at the man I knocked down.

"I am so sorry sir, I should've watched where I was going, I became careless and I'm so sorry. Are you hurt?" I rambled on hoping he wouldn't be mad.

"no, I'm fine. But you're hurt and clearly in a hurry. Where are you headed?" he questioned eyeing my ankle, then my uniform. "work?"

"yeah." I say looking towards direction of the shop. "I was just called in on my day off and wasn't really given much time to prepare and get there, that's why I was running and the stupidly ran into you.." my voice trailed as I saw his face. He was listening but he didn't seem too interested in what I was saying.

There was a silence between us and time was still ticking.

"I'm sorry, but I really must head to work, I'm already late, but I don't want to be extremely late." I apologize once more as I turn to leave. I took one step and intense pain shot through my ankle and me leg. "fuck this is going to suck." I say to myself, but regretfully pull myself forward.

"I know YOU hit ME, but I'm not hurt nor heading somewhere, and I have my car, so let me give you a ride to work. At the rate you are moving it will take a while, and be bad for the ankle." the man said quietly.

I turn to face him, "That would be very nice, thank you." I say accepting, while still ashamed. I follow him to his car and he walks to his side to get in, I hear the click of the doors and I get into the car, I tell him the name of the shop and assume he is familiar with it, as he nods and starts the car.

We got shop quickly, in a car the trip is only 5 minutes. It is 8:37 but nobody is still at the shop. I breathe a sigh of relief and prepare for the day.

"Thank you very much sir. You are very kind for this after I rudely ran into you." I say one last time before exiting.

"Don't worry, this isn't any trouble. Accidents happen and I'm not hurt, so don't stress" he says with a small gentle smile. I smile back and nod and close the car door and limp to the shops entrance. I feel embarrassed. He waits until I am inside before pulling out and heading back where we came from. I can not believe my morning has been so chaotic already. Choosing not to worry about it, I unlock the door and prepare to turn the machines on. After everything is working I turn the open sign on and return to the counter.

Hours tick by as more employees come to work, and costumers come and go. We have several regulars that come, and also many who sit to work is the lounge area. All the people are sweet and make working fun, and often they spark a conversations with me and other coworkers. We all enjoy the friendly feel of this place and as I start to share the story of my rough morning, the doors bell rings.

"Welcome to Java's" I chime and look over. Expecting a costumer, but it is the manager. She looks happier than normal but sees me and becomes a little worried.

"Hey girl, I'm sorry I had to call you in, I really hope it wasn't much trouble. I know you have your classes to get to but a girl had to reschedule her shift and I switched hers to later and needed someone to open. You won't miss your classes, but I'm sorry if this will wear you out before them."

My manager is a very sweet and caring woman. Her name is Rose Java. She loves this shop and her workers, we all treat each other as family here. She is a beautiful woman too, she has a loving boyfriend that treats her wonderfully. She has rich brown hair and beautiful green eyes with many layers of different green and they make such a beautiful small forest in her eyes. She is paler than most people in our state, but like me, we more of stay home or here, so sun doesn't hit us much.

Me and Rose are wonderful friends, and coworkers. Her family has owned this coffee shop for ages and they all care deeply for it. I think she even got her boyfriend to fall in love with the lovely cozy shop as well. He tends to do his work here as well, he is blogger for sports events. So he writes his blogs here. He is rather popular in his line of work.

"No worries, it will be fine." I tell her. I smile to help comfort her, she feels bad so I decide to put the story of my morning on hold.  The last thing I want is her feeling even worse. It is about 10 now and my shift will end in two hours so I have time to get to my classes at one. My ankle is swollen and still hurts to walk, so maybe getting that hour off before is good. My classes are online so I can sit at home and work. Normally I go to the park on nice days like today, but I don't want to stress my ankle more so I will just stay home.

Since this time of day doesn't get much business, I sat down to rest a minute. Then a group came in, and as I mentally started crying, I greeted them with a smile and warm welcome.  The group approached the counter and looked at the assortment of drinks we had on the overhead menu. As I waited, I noticed the man from this morning, I was a bit surprised. He saw me and quickly averted his gaze. Not thinking much of it, a man in their group approached me to ask a question.

"Um, Hi I normally don't get this but my buddy here thought we should stop by.." The gentlemen said motioning to the guy from this morning. "but I've never been to a coffee shop, nor have I ever gotten something fancy, as he spoke I quickly stole a glance back to my brief acquaintance and he was intently watching his friend as he spoke, he looked a little heated at him. Looking back to the man speaking, I answer his questions and then took his order as well as the others. Asking for their names and writing them on their cup, I got to the last order.
