Chapter 1: The Last First Day.

I wake up.

Not because I want to.

I wake up because today's the first day of class and my dad is calling me from downstairs, probably the only thing that keeps me from closing my eyes again is the fact that I know today is not just any first day, but my last first day of school. I'm a senior at Northside High School in Houston, Texas. Yes, Houston, home of the Rockets, Texans, Dynamos and Clary Fitzgerald, a.k.a. me. I know what you're thinking, Fitzgerald, sounds fancy, and let me tell you, I'm anything but fancy, I don't live around the Galleria area or wherever's fancier than that, I don't even know. I don't have the latest iPhone, I don't have my closet full of clothes nor a hundred pair of shoes. My dark brown hair is below my shoulders, brown eyes, 5'2, I'm actually quite normal, if only I didn't have a huge dark secret, nah I'm just kidding, this isn't a Sarah Shepard novel. I finally decide to get out of bed before my dad comes up to my room and throws a glass of water at me, yes, he actually does that. I head to the bathroom and take a quick shower, I leave my hair down so it dries naturally and pick up my outfit, a white t-shirt, black pants, and my beloved vans sneakers. I get dressed and quickly put a binder with blank sheets, some pens, my phone and headphones inside my backpack and go downstairs.

"Finally, you're going to be late if you don't hurry up Clarissa" he tells me as soon as I get to the kitchen "I made you breakfast" I look at the table and I see a cup of coffee and a plate with 2 avocado toasts.

"Thanks dad" I say before I sit down and start eating. Gosh! This is delicious so, this is either the best bread on Earth or I'm really hungry, maybe a little bit of both.

"You're welcome honey, here you go, for lunch and stuff" he hands me 20 bucks "I have to get going so have a great day and don't be late" he says while getting all of his things and get out the door and heads to work.

I finish my breakfast and go to the fridge and take out a bottle of water and before I get the chance to open my backpack and put my water inside, someone opens the door and without even looking I already know who it is.

"Clary! I've been outside for about a billion years would you please hurry up?" She says when I see her coming into the kitchen.

"I'm sorry Rose, I wasn't in the mood of getting up so I'm a little late" I tell her when she sits on a chair.

"Don't worry just give me my coffee and all my anger will go away" Rose says so I give her a cup of coffee and a bottle of water to take to school. This is Rose Fields, my best friend, well her and Alex are my best friends, we're always together, except for now, because she lives about two blocks away from school so we meet her there. We take our backpacks and go out. Rose's car is parked on my driveway so we get inside and we start our journey to the so awaited last year of high school. When we get to the school everything is just how I thought it would be. There were groups of people on both sides of the hallways with girls and boys telling each other what they did during the summer, where they went, who they kissed when they went to some aunt's beach house, who had the best party, who got into more trouble and blah blah blah. I see Alex putting her stuff in her locker.

"Hey Alex" I say to her before opening my locker.

"Hey girls" She says back to us "I'm so excited to be back at school, we need to start practicing as soon as possible if we want to win the championship this year" oh, did I mention that we're all together in the Tennis team? I guess I didn't, and also, Alex is team captain so she's really looking forward to win this year.

"Yes Alex, we know, we practiced almost every day this summer so let's just relax for a moment and enjoy our last year" Rose said when she closed her locker. I was about to say something when John came.

"Hey Alex, is good to see you again, how's the team?" He asked Alex. John is in the baseball varsity and has had a crush on Alex since forever.

"Hey, hum... Good I guess, I haven't seen them yet, we just got here, k bye" She said without even looking at him and started walking away.

"Later John" Rose and I said at the same time, and we started to follow Alex. We go to the cafeteria to wait for the bell to ring, and as always the first thing we do when we sit down is to compare our schedules.

"K, so we have 1st and 6th period together" Alex said, so it's English IV and Tennis "Oh, I wish I had taken economy last year with you guys, now you have government together and I have to go to econ by myself".

"Yeah, but you and Rose have Algebra II together in 5th period" I told her so she feels better.

"Oh you're right" Alex said with a smile "but wait, you have Algebra II as well, why you have it on a different period?" she asks me.

"I'm taking Algebra II A.P., remember?" I say and then the bell rings so we take our stuff and head to the English classroom. When we get there I realize the desks are arranged in groups of four, so we sit together, I wonder who's going to sit with us, then the second bell rings, the door closes and the 4th sit is empty. But not for long.

"Hello class of 2017, a new year awaits outside this building, full of new adventures to live, new memories to make and I know you want to live in that world as soon as possible, and my job is to prepare you for that world as best as I can, and yours is to be the best version of you that you can be" the teacher said with a big smile. She's got short light brown hair, she's really skinny, she is wearing a sweater and long skirt, "My name is Ms. Bracken, I'll be your English teacher this year and I really hope we get along, so for that let me set a few things straight" she sits in her desk "you may use your phones but when I tell you to put it away, you put it away, on your desk facing down, you may listen to music, but when I say music's off, you turn it off- she says looking at us directly to the eyes" you may eat in here, but the trash goes to the trash can, and if you need to go the restroom, do not interrupt my class, just take the hall pass and go, you gotta go, you gotta go, comprende?" she stands up with some sheets of paper, and hands then out, I receive mine with a smile and start reading, it's the syllabus.

"Great, we have 3 elective books, we get to choose what to read, I already love this class" Rose says with a big smile. The door suddenly opens and I see him.

I see HIM.

This can't be happening.

"I'm sorry ma'am, can I come in?" HE asks.

"Yes, come in, late on the first day, way to start the year, pick up the syllabus and sit wherever you want" Ms. Bracken tells him while handing him a sheet of paper "What's your name?".

"Josh, I'm Josh Cavanac" Thank you genius, like I didn't know that before, I think to myself and I feel Rose's and Alex's eyes staring at me. How could they not? I've had a crush on Josh since freshman year, but of course he doesn't know I even exist, and I realize that is about to change when I see him sitting with us, right in front of me so I quickly try to fix my hair "Hi" He says with a shy smile.

"Hi, I'm Ro..." she couldn't finish.

"I know, Rose, Alex and Clary, you're on the tennis team" wait a second, he actually knows I exist, I think this is the best day of my life. I couldn't even concentrate the rest of the class. Great! How am I going to get through an entire year with him sitting in front of me?! HELP!

The class finished and the rest of the day went so fast I didn't even noticed, the only thing I remember I did was I played Tennis like never before, by the end of the day I was so tired that I didn't even wait for the girls to change, I just rode the metro home, opened the door and went straight to my room, I took a shower, put on my pajamas and went to sleep.
