"Wake up sleepy head." My dad says softly. He smells faintly of pancake mix and bacon. I inhale deeply, loving the scent.

"What time is it?" I ask sleepily, rubbing my eyes.

"Time for you to wake up." He stands up and leaves my room. I stumble my way to the shower, almost slipping on the hard wood. After a quick shower and putting on my mascara I get dressed is a baby blue dress with light purple flowers.

"Morning mom." I say softly, sitting down at the table. She looks up from her phone.

"Young lady are you wearing makeup?" I place a pancake on my place and more than a few strips of bacon.

"I'm seventeen." Is my only response. Dad walks over, his spatula still in hand.

"Leave the poor girl alone Ellen." He shoots me a quick wink. I look down to hide my smile.

"You know I don't like it William." Full name, that's a bad sign.

"Let the girl live a little. You've already taken away her fun and crazy teenage experience. Today's her first day of senior year and the craziest thing she's done in her high school experience is get lost in Florida and arrested for accidentally being out past curfew." I smile softly, taking a bite of my food. He's right. My mom is no fun and we both know it.

"Shouldn't you be headed to school?" She snaps at me. I know as soon as I leave they'll start arguing again.

"Bye, happy anniversary." I say softly. I'll always remember it cause it's exactly 7 months before my birthday. Mom went through a rebellious faze and had a fling with my dad, resulting in me. They're only together cause dad did the right thing. Now mom won't even let me breathe in a guy's presence or have friends outside of school cause she's afraid I'll make the same mistake as her and end up trapped in a loveless marriage like she is.

I open to door to my light grey bug and drive to school. No one really knows me, I keep to myself. Reading my teenage days away.

Heading to first period I sit in the back corner of the class room. I enjoy the back. It's always the stoners and delinquent kids that sit back here. The chatty preppy kids sit in the front, far away from me thankfully. The teacher comes in and tells us what we're going to be doing this year, the same thing with my first four classes. Saying stuff about a great year blah blah blah.

Finally lunch arrives. I head towards my usual spot at a table underneath a big oak tree towards the back of the school. While eating my sandwich I find enjoyment in watching the freshman run around like chickens with their heads cut off, trying to find a place away from the big bad seniors, like me. Except I wasn't big nor bad. I was just me. The girl people vaguely remember passing in the halls on running into when they were late but not bothering to help up. I blended with the crowd and honestly I enjoyed the crowd. The crowd kept me safe. The crowd kept me away from the publics eyes.
