Chapter 12

Luca carefully closed his bedroom door and heaved a sigh of relief when Kayla did not stir from the bed. He went over to her side and looked down at her sleeping form. He sat on the bed and slowly caressed her hair.

He missed her these past weeks. Since his father dropped that bombshell, he had done nothing but met with the authorities and the investigators that his father have hired a few years back following the death of his older brother, Markos.

What amazes him was the fact that those idiot investigators and their security team were not able to prevent another death in the family. He could have fired all of them.

The last 2 weeks had been hell. He was forced to relive the worst days from Markos' death. He had to in order to understand and have a good grasp of the situation. He spent his days between dealing with legalities and business.

Markos was a relatively fair man both in his personal and business dealings. He was looked up to and well respected by employees and business associates alike. Although he was not one to mingle, he has never had a record in school for misbehavior.

Carlos, on the other hand, was the mischievous one but has never hurt a fly in his life. He was humorous, the reason why he had all the girls flanked around him. But only Isabella captured his heart. He hadn't had a bad bone in his body. He was a friend to everyone.

They both died the same way, which was believed to be due to a faulty car brake mechanism. But upon further investigation, they found out that it was intentionally cut in such a way that no one would suspect otherwise. The execution was carefully done and so deliberate you would think the perpetrator hated them with passion.

Who would have the heart to kill them? What would they gain by doing so? These are questions that he has no answers for. If the authorities and private investigators weren't able to identify the perpetrator after years of following one possible lead to another, what chance has he got?

They have no enemies, known at least. Competition in the business is stiff but that is only natural and they have always played fair. They have not involved themselves with questionable undertakings, to say the least.

He was young then, barely 20 and was swept headlong to learning and running the business. His father took care of everything else after his stint at the hospital. And it was him who decided, along with the investigators, to keep the real cause of Marko's death a secret in order for the investigation to go unsuspected and to apprehend the suspect before he knew it.

Sadly, it didn't work out as planned and Carlos and Isabella's lives were sacrificed for the bad move.

He berated his father for that. Had he known from the start, Carlos might still be alive today and Yuri will still have his mother. He might have lived a different life, a happier life. Maybe....just maybe...

But then again, if Yuri hadn't lost his mother, he won't be claiming Kayla as his own and convincing her to go to Greece to be with him might be beyond him then. He sighed again. He was torn between wishing some things differently and yet not wanting the result to be in any other way. He clucked his tongue at the irony of life.

His days in the office were no different. If anything, he's a lot busier because of the weeks that he had been away. Then there was that impending negotiation for a possible purchase or merger with another company owned by his father's friend.

His eyes darkened dangerously at the thought of the news brought to his attention by James 3 days before. He was perusing through the papers on his desk when James came in.

"Sir, I think you should see this right away," he said with a worried expression on his face which made him wonder what it was.

He motioned for him to come in as he pushed some papers aside. His locking the door made Luca instantly alert.
