Grayson's pov
I ran faster through the playground in search for my friends playing hide and seek. Well I assumed they were since they all disappeared when I walked out of the school building. I eventually gave up on the running and walked my way around the playground. I'm a chunky kid and running is not my favorite thing to do so you can imagine the struggle I was going through right now. After wandering for half of the lunch period I saw my friends hiding behind a wall so I ran towards them and they squeaked and ran away. I decided to run after them; to win you know. A little girl was sitting on the porch steps leaning back. She looked right at me her green eyes cutting through me.
"You should stop running."
"Why I want to catch my friends?"
"Honey they're running from you to get away from you." She was brunette with long flowing hair that brushed the bottom of her pale yet slightly tanned shoulder blades. Her lips didn't close all of the way as she had a slight overbite. Her lips stayed parted but it didn't take anything away from her soft face.
"Yeah hide and seek tag."
"No sweetie no one is playing tag you're delusional. They don't like you that's why they're running from you." I frown slightly and hang my head down with the new information.
"But look here don't mind those losers come sit with me." I don't make a move just sit there wallowing in the fact that she just told me my friends aren't really my friends. Why would I sit with her now?
"Look I don't bite. I'm sorry for telling you but I'd rather me tell you and you be sad than they embarrass you in front of everybody like they're planning."
"How do you know?"
"My stupid twin brother is one of those losers."
"Oh."
"Names Lauren."
"Grayson."
"So come sit." I walk over and sit beside her as she leans on the steps her hands behind her head relaxing.
"Chill out my friend enjoy your freedom before more algebraic pain ensues yet again."
"Those were big words."
"Relax before school starts again." She says and I nod leaning back.

A year later

"Grayson honey go greet the new neighbors I'll be outside in two minutes."
"Ok mom." I wander out of my house and follow the sit of moving trucks to figure out which house was getting a new set of inhabitants. The house right next to mine was swarmed with people moving things and fixing things up. The movers all matched in blue shirts and black shorts that seemingly allowed comfort and mobility for heavy lifting. The grown men worked like bees in a bee hive, never stopping.

I saw a couple with a small child in their arms and before I knew what was happening there was a girl my age standing in front of me.
"Hi I'm Camila." She says with a vibrant smile and a thick accent.
"I'm G-Grayson." I stutter mentally face palming myself.
"Hi Grayson I'm your new neighbor." She says her face showing that she was making sure in her head that her words were correct. When she was sure she returned to an excited smile.
"Cool!" I say now as excited as she is.
"Do you want to be friends?" I ask her shyly diverting my eyes from hers again.
"Why don't you look at me?" She asks. My cheeks go rosy red and I try to connect our eyes but then divert them again.
"I'm just shy around new people." She thinks for a second mouthing my words then nodding.
"Aww that's cute. Well I will be your friend."
I smile and move my eyes up to meet hers.
"Are you going to my school?
"Langley?"
"Yeah."
"Then yes I am."
"Cool."
"See you at school tomorrow then." She waves and I wave back before heading back inside.
"Hey sweetie I was just heading out how are the neighbors?"
"Really nice mommy."
"I'll go check them out go finish your homework." I nod and head up to my room to do my math work. Once I finished I headed to bed thinking about the girl next door.
-------------

I walked down the stairs the next day and sat at my kitchen table until I realized that the young girl sitting next to me was not my sister and I looked at the smiling girl confused.
"Hey Grayson."
"Hi Camila." It came out like more of a question.
"Grayson sweetie we're bringing Camila to school today alright?" I nod with a shrug. My mom placed my breakfast plate in front of me and I finished it all quickly and grabbed my stuff heading to the car, Camila right behind me.
When my mom dropped us off she watched us walk to the door and then drove off. The school was bustling with kids trying to get to class on time and I could tell how nervous Camila was. I looked to my side seeing her big brown eyes wide and her chest rising and falling at a insanely quick pace. She was basically shaking at this point.
"Hey G-Gray c-can you m-m-maybe I don't n-know h-hold my my h-hand?" She stutters nervously. Noticing her frantic behavior I gently intertwine my mocha colored hand with her shaking tan skinned hand gently rubbing my thumb on the side of her hand like my mom does when I'm nervous or upset. It seems to smooth after a moment. She looks up at me with a smile and we walk down the hallway heading to our class. When we walked in everyone's eyes were on us but I didn't care nobody in this class really likes me anyways except Lauren. Speaking of which she watched Camila with a cocked eyebrow as I walked her up to the teacher.
"Hi sweetie you must be our new student Camila." She nods.
"Well let's get you a workbook and a seat." The teacher grabs an empty blue workbook from behind her handing it to Camila.
"It looks like Lauren and Grayson have some extra seats at their table have a seat there."
She nods and I lead her to our table.
"Hey Laur, this is Camila."
"Hi I'm Lauren."
"Hola." Lauren's usual "bad girl" demeanor breaks and she smiles widely.
"¿Tu hablas español?" It was Camila's turn to smile.
"Si, yo soy cubano."
"Yo soy cubano." Lauren says incredibly ecstatic and the two girls instantly make a connection.
"Ok I'm confused." I say looking between the two girls. As Lauren prepares to explain the teacher asks us to sit so she can begin class.
"Good morning class! If you didn't already notice we have a new student amongst us." Everyone looks at Camila and her breathing speeds up again visibly.
"Sweetie come up and introduce yourself." Camila nervously stands up then takes a deep breath and smiles walking towards the front of the room. She stands tall with her vibrant smile on display.
"Hi. I'm Camila. I'm from Cuba." She stumbles over her words because as I've now realized she doesn't speak great English. Kids laugh at her and her smile drops.
"Why do you talk weird?"
"Are you one of those Mexicans?"
"Can't you speak English?"
"Class don't be rude!" The teacher snaps. Camila hangs her head down slightly now embarrassed and hurt.
"Leave her alone Christopher. You couldn't speak until you were four." Lauren says protecting Camila from the class heckler and my personal bully Chris Jauregui her twin brother.
"Shut up Lauren."
"Stop making fun of people alright."
"Stay out of my business Lauren." He replies but shuts up. Camila rushes back to her seat next to me and Lauren and we pat her back.
"It's alright sweets. They're just mean anyways." I tell her rubbing her back. It takes her a while but soon she smiles her beautiful wide smile. It made my stomach turn in a way I didn't understand.
"You are not mean right?"
"Nope. Never to you. You're my friend." She smiles wider somehow. From then on we became best friends and absolutely inseparable and everything was perfect.
