Cold Coffee: Chapter Six
"Here."
Klaus's voice shattered the nightmare and when I turned to him I saw he was holding out a mug of coffee. The tendrils of white steam unfurled into the air in between us. I quickly gulped down the liquid, scalding my tongue in the process but the stream of burning coffee was refreshing. I smiled a convincing smile.
"Unless she is a twin sister that you had never heard of-"
"No, it's me."
"Why the visit to cuckoo land then?"
I cocked an eyebrow at Klaus who shrugged and nodded towards the framed picture.
"You blanked out. I thought you were going to cry," he said bluntly.
When I didn't reply Klaus returned to his seat, leaving me to sip at the coffee. In that second, while staring at my past, I felt all the anger and contempt for the world rushing towards me. I was a lone figure standing in the middle of a motorway.
"Thanks for the coffee, although customers are not allowed behind the counter," I said.
"I don't believe the workers are allowed to leave the customers unattended either."
I guess not, but what did it matter? I had already broken one rule. What would a few more matter?
