Prologue
The war was over, but everyone could still feel it in their hearts. The losses were awful, the castle was broken, but for those who survived a new chapter would start. Professor McGonagall had taken the heavy task of Headmistress upon herself, which meant making sure students would be able to return to Hogwarts at some point soon.
The war had been won, but that didn't mean the dark times had passed. The Wizarding World was still held captive in the darkness. Darkness kept most wizards and witches from truly moving forward. Grief filled most wizarding homes and Diagon Alley hadn't been this empty in a very long time.
Weasley's Wizard Wheezes had been open for a while right after the Battle of Hogwarts. George had tried to cope with his brother's loss by keeping the business up and running, but soon he collapsed under the heavy pressure of his grief, a grief he hadn't really been able to face. His best friend, his twin brother, his partner in crime had passed away and it was hard realising it. The shop closed for a few months as George tried to cope with his brother's death, along with the rest of the Weasley family.
Hermione had been by Ron's side as he went through his grieving period, but she also had her parents to worry about. When she returned home after the battle, they were gone. They had apparently taken off and no one knew where to. She had asked the Minister for Magic, Kingsley Shacklebolt, for help and he had send two Aurors out to help her find her parents. After a week of searching they were found in Australia. They were brought in and their memories were returned after two days. All the while Hermione had stayed in the Burrow, but she had to go back home to help her parents and to clear some things up.
Harry stayed behind with the Weasleys. Grimmauld place 12 was now his, but it was hard for him to go there. The memory of Sirius and the life they could've had if it weren't for Bellatrix Lestrange, hurt too much. Ginny had ushered him to go there once, but he had returned mentally beaten up. He hadn't really been able to grief for his Godfather and with the loss of one other best friend of his parents, life wasn't looking very bright.
As for the Death Eaters, they were going through a well-deserved tough time. Most were captured and held in Azkaban under the surveillance of well-trained Aurors. Dementors couldn't be trusted after they had joined the side of Voldemort and the Death Eaters in the Battle of Hogwarts. The Ministry held them captive and used them once in a while to let them perform the Dementor's kiss on sentenced Death Eaters.
Draco, Narcissa and Lucius Malfoy were amongst the Death Eaters, captured and put behind bars. There had been no fight left in Draco nor his mother. They knew the Aurors were coming and surrendered, opposed to Lucius, who tried to escape. A trial had started for Draco and Narcissa, a trial that would decide their fate. Because they left before they knew Voldemort was defeated and because they surrendered and cooperated, they were discussed amongst the jury.
Meanwhile they were kept in Azkaban, because every Death Eater on the loose was a flight risk. Because of the overpopulation within Azkaban and the Dementor's kiss cases in between, it took a full month for the jury to decide Draco and Narcissa's fate.
The day they were released from their prison rooms, the Malfoy Manor was surrounded by paparazzi. Ever since that day journalists have tried to get them to talk, to get a picture, the full story. But neither Draco nor his mother stepped foot out of the protective walls of their home, a home they had come to hate.
