Half time is over; the game is continuing with a lead to the opposing team. I'm batting, "Its all on you, Meg. If you mess up we won't be able to tie up." I know the pressure already, they all presumed that drilling it into me was the best idea. As I scanned the playing field, I began to focus and out of habit, I noticed him in the same spot, watching me.
"Let's go, Meg!" His cheers soothed me, there was the boy I always relied on. But she was there too. Constantly distracting him. Leading him away.
"Strike!" I missed the ball, pathetically in the moment. The bowler runs again and this time I get a good shot on the ball. And ran.

I could see them all watching me. But I don't like this, I don't want this. We were always there together, I was closest to you and now someone else is in my place. Don't look at her, notice me. Not with those eyes, not with the eyes for her. Don't you dare!
"Meg, stop! Stop!" I ran past my limit and they'd caught me out.

My ankle felt broken, I was surprised nobody noticed me dragging it along. I saw him as he ran towards me, out of breath and worried. Of course he'd noticed though. He pressed his hands on my shoulders and stared into my eyes, despite being the colour of coal soot, they still managed to sparkle. "Meg, what were you thinking?" He actually wanted an answer from me, to be alone with me. I guess it was too much, my face had completely frozen. I took my good leg and firmly kicked his shin. Then I legged it, I'm sure he followed me, the boy I'd always expected to be there. I reached the crossing and made it past the track as it closed. I heard him calling out my name in the bitter twilight and as I turned back I saw him only briefly before the train barged its way between us. Blocking us off in a universal reminder that I was not the one. Next time I checked, he was gone.
