"So what am I supposed to wear to this party tonight?" I say to Rebecca as we are walking in the mall. The mall is huge, much bigger than the one at MU. I catch my reflection in one of the mirrors at the mall and notice that my freshly cut hair actually looks really good. The girl who cut it has a lot of experience, and as soon as she saw my long hair she said she knew exactly what to do, which made me a little apprehensive. After the hour and a half long process, I was actually surprised at how good it looked. My long brown hair, now has golden highlights and is layered and angled to perfection. I didn't get my bangs back, but I got a few short layers in the front, which frame my face nicely. I have to remind myself to go back to the stylist Kim in a few months.
"Well normally your brother and his roommates throw some sort of themed party."
"Oh my god, please say he still isn't obsessed with doing that." I tell her.
"Ha! What do you mean still?" Rebecca says to me as she lifts up a cute gold tribal skirt.
"When we were in high school, he'd always try to throw parties when our parents weren't home. One time, there was a guy in the bushes wearing just a trash bag when my parents came home. Jake got into SO much trouble. But no one could stop talking about the party the next week at school."
Rebecca looks like she's about to burst at the seams laughing. "You'll never believe it, but before Christmas break, I'm pretty sure that I saw someone wearing a trash bag in his backyard."
I can't help but laugh. Jake hasn't changed that much over the years. He's still one of the most liked people that I've ever met. He always is meeting new people, and making friends.
"Tonight the theme is 'black light'. It's gonna be a big rage since everyone is back from break."
"Black light? What do you wear to a black light party?" I ask her rolling my eyes.
"Well, I know you think it's lame, Zo. But it's actually pretty cool. You wear like a white shirt or something, and glow in the dark stuff. Then there are black lights and everything is sort of... lit up. Sometimes they throw glow in the dark paint."
"Sounds messy." I tell her. This kind of partying isn't what I'm used to, but I did promise her I'd go.
"Thank god there are such things as showers then," she says while rolling her eyes at me. "Let's go find some glow bracelets and neon or white shirts."
"Fine," I tell her, and I can't help but feel sort of excited. The party doesn't sound too bad, and if it's dark in there, people might not notice that I'm new. I can sort of just do my own thing, maybe even blend in.
After Rebecca and I have spent too much money on useless supplies for the party we decided to head back to the apartment. Rebecca and I live in an apartment only a few miles away from campus. It's not too big, but it's perfect. She had a roommate last semester, but the girl moved out to live with her boyfriend before Thanksgiving, and Rebecca had been basically on her own since I got there.
Our apartment is pretty nice. It has a decent sized kitchen, with a small dining room. Rebecca and I each have our own rooms, which I am thankful for since I do like my own space. Her room is filled with pink and zebra print, literally everywhere. Lamps, rugs, pillow cases, you name it, it's either pink or zebra print. My room is a little less... vibrant. I have mostly white furniture and the walls are gray. I brought a stack of my favorite books with me and of course my acoustic guitar. I used to play it every day, but I haven't had the energy to in a while. Hopefully this semester I'll be in the mood to play again. Otherwise, the room is pretty "bare". I have two yellow lamps and a small white desk in the corner, but otherwise I don't have it filled too much.
