Silence, all I could hear is silence. You could feel sadness surrounding the room, you could almost taste it. It was as if everything you loved had fallen…but it did…well at least a part of it. I snapped out of my daze when I heard a knock coming from my door. I shifted a little, pulling my knees up and hugging them. I could see from the corner of my eye, my mother coming in. “Today’s the day” she said, reminding me more of what had happened. She walked towards me, trying to avoid the mess I made on the floor from all the throwing I did this couple of weeks. She sat down in front of me, near the window. I didn’t look at her, I didn’t look at anyone, I didn’t want too. I didn’t want to see the pity on people’s eyes, the sadness, I just couldn’t take it. “Look Soph, I know it’s hard for you, it’s hard for all of us. I know anything I say won’t help you get over the fact that what had happened, happened and that nothing I could do could change anything but I just want to let you know that we are all here for you. We both know It’s not your fault, it’s no one’s fault. Just please, cheer up. You know she would’ve wanted you too…” mom said, as she laid a reassuring hand on my knee, giving me a sad smile. “But it is...” I thought, as I continued to ignore her and continued my gaze towards the window. She stood up and walked towards my door. She stopped half way and said “Breakfast is ready, you should probably get ready” and left. Silence filled the room again, all I could hear was my faint breathing. I kept my gaze towards the window, seeing my reflection. I could see dark circles below my tired, swollen eyes. All I could think of was that day, that day where everything had changed.

“How could you?! I thought we were friends! Best friends to be exact!” I screamed whilst I tried to contain myself from going all berserk. “Can you please stop overreacting? You’re getting angry at me for something so simple!” Julia said with an annoyed look upon her face. “Simple?! You call not standing up for me when I clearly do it all the time when you get teased or bullied simple?!” I screamed at her. “I was scared!” she contradicted “Oh and I wasn’t? I thought we were in this together? You and me! We would protect each other from everyone who defies us. But I guess I was wrong” I said as disappointment plasters my face. The look of guilt and regret visible on Julia’s face, “I’m sor-“ I cut her off “Don’t bother! I clearly don’t mean as much to you as you mean to me” I said “-maybe it’s best we stop being best friends, maybe we should stop being friends at all” I continued as I yanked the silver bracelet I bought her for her birthday which signifies our friendship and threw it on the road. “But-“ she started but I turned my back at her and walked away. I then heard car horns blaring from behind and when I looked back, I saw Julia getting hit by a car, sending her back flying as she hit the ground with a thug. “JULIA!!” I screamed at her and ran as fast as I could but I was too late, it already happened. The driver didn’t even bother to help her but instead went for a hit and run. I felt tears streaming down my face as I knelt down in front of Julia’s blood covered body. I picked her up and held her close, A blood curdling scream slipped from my mouth. I could feel the pain and regret of losing my friend, and knowing I’m the reason for this. I hurriedly took my phone out and called for the paramedics but when they came and brought Julia to the hospital, she was already dead.

Some people say it wasn’t my fault, others say it was the driver’s fault. But I know it was my fault, if I hadn’t gotten into a fight with Julia and threw the bracelet, she would have still been alive. I’m the reason why my best friend is not here with me. I’m the reason why Julia’s family will never be the same again. I’m the reason why she would never fulfill her dreams. I’m the reason for everything. I should’ve been the one to get hit by the car, I should’ve been the one to die, not her.

I jumped up when I heard my clock blaring; I stood up and walked towards it, shutting it off. I remembered my mom telling me to get ready; I hurriedly went to the bathroom. I hadn’t realized I was crying until I looked at myself at the mirror. I then took a shower and got dressed. I wore the traditional all black, I also wore the silver friendship bracelet I had, the one just like Julia’s, only with my initials. I heard my mom call for me, telling me it’s time to go. I then got my purse and went downstairs. I ate my breakfast and we drove to the venue. We got out of the car and went inside. We were greeted by Julia’s mom as she gave us each a hug. “How are you doing?” she asked me but I just gave her a sad smile. I then slowly walked up to Julia’s coffin, seeing she was peacefully laid down in white.  I fought the urge to cry in front of everyone. I looked at her wrist, seeing she didn’t have her bracelet. “I guess it got smashed by that car…” I thought as I blinked away the tears that formed in my eyes. I then heard Julia’s mom call me and asked me to say a few words. I hesitantly agreed and got up to the platform, “I-“ I started before I ran off, crying. I couldn’t speak; I couldn’t handle the pressure of being in that room. So I ran, I ran to the place where it all happened.

I got to the park, breathless, trying to catch my breath. I then sat at the nearest bench, pulling my knees and cried. I remembered all of the things Julia and I did together, I remembered all the fun things we did at this very park, I remember when we first met, I remember how happy I used to be before this happened. “Are you okay?” I heard a voice say, I then looked up and saw a girl around my age looking down at me. I sniffed and said “I’m great” and I tried my best to give her a convincing smile. “You’re not fooling anyone with that smile of yours” She said as she sat down beside me. “I’m Elin by the way, what’s your name?” “I’m Sophia” “Okay Sophia, why don’t you tell me what happened” she said and I felt as if I could trust her so I told her everything that happened. After I was finished, I was already bawling my eyes out.  Elin hugged me and rubbed my back, trying to calm me down. I calmed down a little and managed to stop my hiccups. “She’s fine, she already forgave you” She told me as she gave me a reassuring smile.  I wiped a few tears and looked at her and said “How do you know?” She looked up at the sky and smiled. She then looked back at me and said “I just do, trust me”. I gave her a smile, a real smile. She smiled back and I knew right there and then that I would be happy again. I then felt a vibration coming from my pocket, I then took my phone out and saw I had a text from my mom asking me where I was and if I was okay. I texted her back, telling her I was fine and that I would be coming home soon. “Hey you want to maybe ha-“  I got cut off when I looked back and saw Elin was nowhere to be seen. I looked around, trying to find even the slightest figure of her walking away but there was no sign of her. Suddenly, something caught my eye, on the bench, where Elin was, was a silver bracelet just like mine, only with Julia’s initials. “It can’t be…”  I thought as I reached my hand out, slowly grabbing it. I couldn’t believe my eyes, it was exactly like Julia’s bracelet, only not broken, not even any tire scratch. Confusion plastered on my face as I held the bracelet on my hand, trying to figure out how this has happened. I felt a cool breeze wash over me; I could hear a sound, like a voice whispering through the air. “But it is…”
