Adam hung his head in shame as the man named Samuel read his life story, including the part where he lost control and killed
someone.
And, from the part of the conversation he'd been conscious for, he knew that the person he'd killed had been important to Samuel. He imagined that this wouldn't end well for him, his father, or his girlfriend Sophie.
When he first saw her tied up, he couldn't believe his eyes. Then he quickly realized that what was happening to Sophie was all his fault. He'd dragged her into this by falling in love with her.
