Charming Criminal [8]

You'd had the feeling he was hiding something ever since you'd met Ryuk.

Ryuk. Speaking of the beast, you still didn't know an awful lot about him. Caught up in a whir of events that had transpired since that day, you hadn't actually had the chance to ask Light about his peculiar pet. He was, after all, probably the source of Light's sudden alteration.

"Ryuk?"

"Hm?" He muttered lazily as you let the door fall on Light, walking behind you. He caught up with an irritable frown.

"Tell me more about yourself."

His eyes swivelled to face you, interest piqued. "What do you want to know?"

You tapped a finger against your bottom lip, brows drawn together. "I don't know... where do you come from? What exactly are you? How did you wind up as Light's magical-"

"What did I tell you?" Light hissed, grabbing your sleeve and giving it a tug. You stumbled a little, caught off balance. "Don't talk to him in public," he continued, gesturing to the students now bumbling to their next lesson. His eyes eclipsed then, becoming a brownish-red, hard, like dark granite. There it was again - that cold, dour look.

"Sorry," you mumbled, unable to say anything else.

Ryuk snickered. "Someone's testy today."

"Okay, uhm, can we just leave already? Then we can talk as freely as we want," you suggested with a nervous titter, waving your hands idly.

Light's face loosened, his eyes easing off into their usual soft grin. "Of course. C'mon then. Don't know what you two are dilly dallying about for."

"You didn't have to actually come on the bus y'know," you rebuked, shooting Ryuk a withering look. "You were practically sitting on top of me!"

"There were no empty seats," he whined in response, leathery wings churning the air as he flew beside you.

You staggered a sigh. "Exactly! So why not just fly next to it?"

"Alright, alright, [Y/N]. You do realise it looks like you're quarrelling with that fence?"

You turned on him, sharpish, teeth gritted. "Shut it, Yagami."

"That your catchphrase or something?"

This boy really knew how to rile you up. Yet you managed to put a constraint on your tongue - biting on it - to prevent you from releasing a barrage of insults his way.

A few minutes later, a door jangled as Light pushed it open, admitting you into a small, dimly-lit, domed cafe. It was the kind of establishment you find dressed in tea lights and flowery table clothes, the walls strung with bunting and hanging charms that reflected the light and made it bounce off the tables in little golden globes.

Light ushered you into a seat, before shrugging off his jacket and draping it over the back of his own chair. "So, what can I get you?"

A little flustered by the cramped exterior, you eyed the menu with an indecisive frown. "Uhm... I'll have... uh, just [drink] and [cake], please and thank you."

"Sure thing," he said with a wink, ignoring Ryuk's cries for something apple-related as he sauntered up to the counter. You let your gaze wander absentmindedly around the cafe as you waited, suppressing a snigger as Ryuk did his usual tricks around the room, eventually coming to rest on the top of woman's head opposite you.

"Here you are." Light set down the tray with a small clatter, dishing out the cups and plates with an easy smile.

"Are you sure I can't pay for my own order at least? That's twice you've paid now."

Light shrugged nonchalantly. "It's not a problem. I wouldn't be much of a gentleman if I made you pay, would I?"

You ran your tongue along the roof of your mouth. "Oh I see. Back to the whole gentleman-business, huh?"

You dwindled into silence, nibbling at your cake, Light adopting a pensive scowl as he circled his finger along the rim of his cup. You couldn't help but wonder what was going on in that head of his.

A small ping in your pocket alerted you of a message, and you slid you phone out onto your palm with a sigh.

Where on earth are you?! School phoned me saying you were absent from lesson.

"Great," you muttered, swiping it away without a reply, and proceeding to scroll down the feed of your local news. Littered with the same titles, you couldn't help but find your curiosity piqued. You didn't keep frequent tabs on the news, but you were at least moderately aware of the latest.

"Say Light," you began, lifting your eyes from your phone, "what do you think about this Kira?"
