Hey y'all so I've been writing essays for geo and I wrote one about how sustainable our technology is and I think that it's really important that we are cautious about what is really happening when we get a new phone so yeah...
Our modern day techonology is most definitely not as sustainable as it should be. Companies are making their technologies break down in a certain amount of time so people will buy new models and the company can make a larger profit. They also market their products very well so that when people see the advertisments, all the "new" and "improved" features tempt them to buy a the "different" product. Though this is good for the company and people who have invested in their stocks, it is extremely bad for the environment. The electronics are made from non-renewable resources and use fossil fuels to be shipped around the world, contributing to global warming and pollution. In addition to the pollution from creation, there is the e-waste that comes with it. Electronics can be recycled and their parts taken out to be reused in new pieces of technology, though most people just put them in the garbage and most companies choose not to reuse parts. In fact, most of the time it is only a small inner piece that changes shape in different models, not really anything big right? However, some companies have tried to develop smartphones with parts that can be replaced. //P A company called Phonebloks developed a plan for a phone that would have replacable and interchangable parts. . They collaborated with a company owned by Google called Motorolla to create a prototype for the phone, but unfortunately the project was dismissed. More companies should move towards this type of phone because we need to preserve the earth for future generations and we can start by reducing our e-waste. We also need to consider what is truly nessecary. For example, you don't need to buy every new iPhone model. You could use the money for something better and if your current phone isn't completely and utterly unusable, you don't need a new one, or having multiple electronics. You don't need a tablet and a phone and an iPod and a laptop. Instead, pick one or two things that you need and recycle the others or give it to a sibling. If you decide you absolutely need all of them (even though you shouldn't need electronics to survive besides medical technology), then see if a sibling is willing to share an electronic with you. In conclusion, it is important to be aware of our choices and their effects on the environment because if we aren't, we leave it up to future generations, but we shouldn't leave them with our work.
