(Story written from Caleb's Point of View)
If a stranger would've seen Caleb at that exact moment, they would've probably called the police. Him sitting on an abandoned playground at 2 am, in complete darkness, with blood running down his cheek, and a swollen eye and lip, may not seem ideal, but for Caleb, it was a reality.
If you were to meet Caleb in the day, he would seem like every other high school senior. He had friends, went to parties and tried maintaining good grades in school. The only thing that could seem weird about him, were the many hobbies he had. Caleb took guitar lessons, piano lessons, went kickboxing twice a week and had a job at the local Coffee shop.
But see, Caleb had a big dark secret, and not just his crush or his sexuality or something, other 17-year-old boys had secrets about. No, not at all. Caleb had a secret so big, he would probably end up dead if he told it. Literally.
Caleb's dad seemed like a nice guy when you first met him. His name was Hendrik, and to be honest already the name just gives me a bad vibe
Sadly, he wasn't, but Caleb was the only one who knew that, and sadly he couldn't do anything about it.
If only Caleb's dad had a normal job, like a banker, engineer or literally anything else, he would've been in jail for child abuse a long time ago. But sadly that wasn't reality.
Caleb's dad was the chief of Police and therefore Caleb couldn't go to the police and report his father without him finding out, and then somehow making the case "disappear" and then making sure that Caleb wouldn't be able to ever say anything again.
That was what Caleb's dad told him every time he would beat him up for some pointless reason. Also, Caleb couldn't tell anyone else anything, because his dad was always very careful not to hit Caleb in the face, but only in places where it could be from his kickboxing tournaments. Caleb also tried avoiding going to PE class, by coming up with some ridiculous excuses, because he just wasn't ready for the confrontation of someone asking him where the many bruises are from.
Caleb's mother passed away from cancer when he was only 1, at least that's what his dad told him, but regarding the treatment Caleb received from his father, he wasn't too sure if it was really cancer.
Caleb had a small bottle of his mother's perfume in a shoebox under his bed, that he would always smell when times got hard. It had a calming effect on him.
Caleb had been sitting on the playground for an hour now. He knew he had to skip school tomorrow, because his dad got very drunk, and forgot about the "not in the face" rule.
Just as Caleb thought about where to go tomorrow, where no one who could recognize him,
he heard a noise behind him. Due to the fact he get's scared very easily, he immediately flinched, got up from the swing he was sitting on and hurried out of the park. It could have just been his imagination, it just really felt like someone was watching him, but as he went to turn around there was no one there, still he didn't want to take a risk, so he hurried and ran home.
Caleb stood outside his front door for at least 10 minutes, trying to figure out if his dad was still awake and doing something in the house. When he was absolutely certain, that his dad was asleep, he slowly pushed the door open and saw his dad passed out on the couch.
Caleb went over to check his pulse, and a small spark of guilt washed over him, as he hoped that there would be none.
Caleb decided to clean up a little and do the dishes. When he was finished, he went in his room up and got a shock, as he saw himself in the mirror; dried blood all over his face and a very swollen eye. Yeah, he would definitely have to skip school tomorrow.
After taking a muscle relaxing shower, he went to bed and fell asleep almost instantly.
Caleb's eyes flew open at the sound of his phone going off with his alarm. He hurried to turn it off, in the hope, it hadn't woken up his father. After making sure, his father was still asleep, he went into the bathroom, to get ready for the day.
When he was done getting ready he went down to the living room, saw his dad's wallet and took a 100 dollar bill out. His dad wouldn't notice anyway. After sliding the100 dollar bill into his pocket, he went up to his room and grabbed his phone and car keys.
Caleb's dad had got him a car on his 17th birthday. Probably just, to not raise suspicion. Why would a 17-year old boy with a wealthy dad not have a car?
Caleb hopped inside his 2015 Chevrolet Impala and drove out the driveway. Caleb was heading out of the little city he lived in and headed off to the mall about 13 miles away from his home. He knew this would be far away enough from anyone who could recognize him. Caleb's eye was still swollen and he had a cut mark on his lip and cheek. He didn't want to meet anyone he knew and raise suspicion.
With his wallet and phone in his pocket, he first headed to the small breakfast diner and ordered a big plate of pancakes.
If Caleb wouldn't have been so distracted from his hunger, his sharpened senses, after 15 years of abuse, would have sensed the 3 unfamiliar guys sitting at a table about 15 feet away, staring intensely at him.
The rest of the day went by so fast, Caleb almost missed his 5 PM shift, at the coffee shop, but he made it just in time.
At 11 PM Caleb headed home, knowing his father would already be in bed after a hard week of work, solving crimes, and hitting your own son.
He decided to start on the 20-page essay he had to write for biology class.
At 2:30 AM Caleb went to bed, having written a solid 8 pages already. He knew that if the rest of the pages turned out so good, it would be a solid A.
At 3:30 am Caleb still couldn't sleep and he decided to write his best friend, Mark. He knew Mark would be awake at this time, since it was Friday and Mark probably was out in clubs or smoking weed in the park, with some douches.
Caleb: "Hey, u up?"
Mark: "Yeah, of course, is something wrong?"
Caleb: "Nah, I just can't sleep,"
Mark: "I'm in the park with Rosie and Liam, you wanna join?"
Caleb: "Sure, why not. I'll be there in 15."
Caleb threw on some clothes and ran his fingers through his hair, grabbed his car keys and headed out to the park.
