Incredibly late getting home, Lilly knew exactly what was to come when she walked through the front door of her house. She knew that her Father would be waiting on the bottom step watching the doorway in anger. It was raining, cold and dark outside but all she could think about was running away. A choice she was never able to make.
Walking closer to her street, listening to the rain drops bouncing off the surface of her umbrella, a million thoughts ran through her mind. The little voice in her head telling her to turn around and never go back. Her body ached from all the bruises he left behind. Constantly wishing her mother was around to help her through this but even she wasn't strong enough. Lilly knew she didn't have the strength to stand up to the man who was meant to protect her. She was weak, scared and helpless.
Entering the house, Lilly's Father slammed the door behind her and threw her against the wall. Her umbrella fell to her feet as she gasped for air. His hand around her throat, she wanted to scream but she couldn't. Her Father yelled viciously, spit flying from his mouth towards her. His grip loosened and Lilly fell to the floor, trying to catch her breath she quickly gathered herself and ran up to her room.
Busting through the door Lilly's Father waved a sharp kitchen knife in front of her face as she sat knees to her chest in the corner. She continued to sit in fear as tears fell uncontrollably from her face. She didn't scream because she knew no one would hear her cries.
As he screamed at her, Lilly thought about her mother once again and all the things he had put her through. Anger rushed through her body and she could feel herself lunge forward to try and escape. For a second she was almost out the door, but it was merely a glimpse of freedom before her Father threw her onto her back, holding her down on the floor with all his strength, knife clutched above her; about to end her suffering when suddenly there was a knock on the front door.
Her Father jumped up quickly and looked back at Lilly before leaving the room to answer. Lilly stood quietly at the top of the stairs, listening to the sweet sound of a woman's voice. "I'm sorry to bother you Sir, but I noticed your car lights were on. Don't want you to waste your battery life." The unfamiliar woman said with a giggle. Lilly watched as her Father left the house, closing the door behind him. Feeling a sense of relief, she looked up towards the ceiling and closed her eyes tightly, letting a single tear fall from her face. "Thank you Mom!" She whispered.
