Keeley twirled Zach's helmet around her finger while she waited outside the Edgewood locker room. A smile graced her lips as more cheering rose up through the walls like a pack of animals. Droplets of rain splatted against her hair, but it was already messier than Harry Potter's from Zach's celebratory bear hug where he slung his helmet onto Keeley's head.
Growing up with Zach, Keeley had attained a greater understanding for the game of football than the average person and she could confirm the last play of the game was nearing magical. Throughout the entire game, Zach was showing off his arm throwing as far as a fifty-yard pass for a touchdown, but the Crosswell quarterback was doing equally well. If the players' goals were to keep the crowd on edge they succeeded. The last play, however, Zach took matters into his own hands. Rather than look to his coach for help, he met Keeley's eyes and winked. When the ball was snapped back to him, he faked a throw to his running back and took it himself using his teammates as a wall diving into the end zone with two seconds left in the game. The crowd went wild! Keeley was the first on her feet screaming for her brother until she didn't have any voice left to use. When the final whistle blew, he sprinted over to Keeley and they celebrated all the way back to the team.
Even a half hour later Keeley was still filled to the brim with pride for Zach. The USC scout had been standing directly to the right of Zach as he partied in the end zone, and if that didn't earn him the scholarship nothing would.
The locker room door swung open causing Keeley to jump back, startled out of her thoughts. Zach was obviously leading his team with Gavin struggling next to him carrying Zach's bag. Keeley shook her head at her brother's antics but wasn't going to take away from his celebrations. It was his night after all.
Zach slung his arm across Keeley's shoulders, "Ready sis?"
"Yeah, one second. Just let me text Nicky real quick." Keeley dug around in her sweatshirt pocket but came up empty. She attempted to stuff her hands in her pants pockets, though they were so small she could barely fit her fingers. Her face dropped as she came to the realization that her phone was nowhere to be found. "The parentals are going to kill me."
"What did you say, Keels?" Zach looked at her only the slightest bit concerned.
"Uh, nothing. Go ahead I'll catch up." The team continued to the parking lot while she sprinted back to the bleachers. Granted, "sprinted" might have been a generous term considering she was panting like a dog with her hands pressed down on her knees and sopping wet hair plastered to her forehead.
All tiredness was forgotten when her eyes met those of sea blue. Keeley felt as though she'd been zapped by lightning with her energy recharged. He flipped his hair breaking eye contact. "What you doing, baby doll?"
"I'm just looking for my phone, and I'd prefer it if you would refrain from calling me baby doll." Keeley blushed in embarrassment and pulled a piece of hair behind her ear.
"Would it happen to look like this, baby doll?" He raised his lips in a cocky half smile while pulling a black phone out of his pocket. A sigh of relief escaped her lips.
"Thank you!" She swiped her hand at the phone, but he moved it back.
"Uh-uh-uhh!" He clicked his tongue and wagged a finger at Keeley. "You didn't think I'd give you this for nothing, did you baby doll?"
"I asked you not to call me that." Keeley's blush turned into an angry blaze. "And it's my phone, not yours. So hand it over." She held out her hand expectantly.
"Ah, c'mon. That's no fun, now is it?" He wrapped his arm around Keeley's back as she dived for the phone and pulled her into him. "Just a kiss baby doll. Trust me, you'll be begging for more."
