Jade and Ruby's thoughts were completely swapped when the third test was announced. It was magic. Jade, excited to put her intelligence to the test, drug her friend so she wouldn't be left behind from the group.

Soon they arrived in a room with rocks sitting on the tables, an annoyed scholar studying from several open books, two dead rats, and a group of fairy creatures in the corner, fluttering and playing poker. Everyone took to a table, or well, two people to a table, as there were two 'rocks' at each one. Once everyone was behind a table, confused as to what they were going to do, the man studying from the books spoke up.

"I'm not your teacher or anything, but I'm stuck telling you what your test is." The man spoke. Not removing his gaze from his studies.

Ruby, immediately recognizing the familiar man, started to snicker to herself. Hearing the noise, the man looked up from his books and sighed deeply. He was the student Ruby tried to hit with a torch earlier in the day.

"In front of you are runes, all you have to do is activate them. How? Just concentrate, you don't need magical capabilities to at least get them to shimmer." The man said, trying his best to ignore Ruby and her ever-growing grin.

The group cautiously looked at their runes. Ruby just looked at hers and poked it. When it didn't do anything, she moved her attention to a bug crawling on the table.

Jade on the other hand, she anxiously picked hers up, and within a minute it began to glow brightly. The student lifted his gaze, looked impressed, wrote something down, and went back to studying.

The rest of the group either got some glowing, a bit of a shimmer, or absolutely nothing. Once everyone has either gotten their runes to glow, or gave up, the man in front spoke up again.

"As expected this didn't take too long." He began, "For those who I've deemed skilled enough to pass, will have a shot at basic spell casting. Seeing as most of you probably won't end up in a magic class, you'll be just given an illumination spell to read off and light a simple light-bulb. Nothing difficult. Any volunteers to go first?"

Jade's hand shot up at inhuman speeds. "I volunteer as tribute!"

"Very well." The student handed Jade a sheet of paper with an odd language written on it. She looked it over, and handed it back to the student.

Jade, thinking she memorized it, grabbed the light-bulb on the table, and muttered the spell. When the light-bulb didn't light, both the student and Jade were shocked. However, their shock was quickly shifted from the light-bulb to one of the student's dead rats.

"I didn't do that." The student said aloud. "How did you perform necromancy?"

"I don't know, I just did. I guess I said the spell wrong." Jade replied, petting the slightly decomposed rat. "I think I'll name you Chompers."

"Well he's yours. You resurrected him, so call him what you want." He shifted his attention to the rest of the group. "Anyone else want to give the illumination spell a shot?"

Not wanting to be outdone, Sara decided she would try.

"You only scored a 3, you aren't qualified to try-"

"Don't tell me what I can and cannot do!" Sara soon darted from her table, snatched the piece of paper with the spell written on it, grabbed the light-bulb from Jade, and tried desperately to light to bulb. Five minutes passed and nothing happened.

The student in charge of this didn't even bother to try and stop the girl. He knew that there was no way, so he'd rather save the energy. Eventually though, Chompers decided to take matters into his own paws. The little rat hopped off the table and darted over to Sara. Before she could try her next attempt, Chompers' teeth were embedded into her foot.
