I let out a sigh of relief as the logo appeared on the screen and then flashed to the login page. I smiled to myself, shut the lid and picked up my book. I put the pencils back into the case, stood up and begun walking towards our next class.
-
I slid into my seat next to Amy and feigned banging my head against the table and groaned.
"You were right. This school is the worst." I sulked.
"What happened?"She laughed and shook my shoulders.
"Some asshole knocked me on my way out of the classroom. Dropped my laptop and the screen shattered."
"Damn, your pride and joy. Is it still working?"
"Yeah. " I replied.
"Are you kidding?" Amy whispered with a frustrated expression.
I followed her gaze to the door as the same four boys walked through door.
"What the hell? Ethan, Grayson, Nathan and Will. In the same class. Again. In our class. Again!" I said, leaning back in my chair, running my hands through my hair.
Coach Janson jogged into the room seconds later, the whistle hanging from his neck swinging as he moved.
"Seats, team!" He yelled, taking a seat on the edge of the desk at the front of the room.
"Now... psychology. The study of what? What is psychology?" He questions us.
"Boring." remarks a voice from the back. I turn around to see one of the twins, Ethan, fist bump the guy he was sitting next to.
"The only class I'm not passing." says Nathan, who smirks at Grayson and leans back in his seat.
Coach chose to ignore them, and his eyes began to trail over everyone in the class. Some looked down at their work and pretended to be busy, whilst others stared at Coach's whistle, wanting to avoid being picked.
"You. What's your name?" he said pointing at me.
"Uhh... Luce Simmons." I stuttered.
"What's psychology." He questioned.
"Um.. the study of the human mind. How people behave and think, and what influences that."
"Right. It's the scientific study of how people behave, think and feel. It can include everything about the human experience from the basic workings of the human brain to consciousness, memory, reasoning and language to personality and mental health.
It studies people in different environments and how that affects them. Now I see that you've all chosen your seats. And so I'm assuming you all feel comfortable with who you are sitting next to."
People began to look at who they were sitting next to and nod. I glanced at Amy next to me and she smiled wickedly. He had no idea how close we were.
"And so... in your other classes, you get to choose who you sit next to. Which means you are comfortable. When people are comfortable, they don't push themselves to be better, improve.
Nobody makes discoveries when they are comfortable. When people are comfortable, they lose their thirst for discovery and knowledge. Einstein wasn't comfortable with what the world knew in mathematics and science. This lead to some of the greatest advances to date."
I looked to Amy and shared a look with her. What is he talking about?
"And so... with that. Those sitting on the left of the desks. Move back a row. Those in the back move up here. " he said, tapping the spot in front of Amy.
Groans and complaints erupted throughout the room. I turned to Amy, whose face of disbelief mirrored my own.
"At least you're not sitting next to one of them." she laughed, as she cocked her head towards the twins. She picked up her books and walked to the back row.
"Before you sit down. Those who just moved... switch to the other side of the room." Coach ordered.
My face fell once more. I watched as one of the twins slid into Amy's old seat and set his books down. I stared at him. First my laptop, now this. Could this day get any worse.
He turned towards me, smirking.
"Grayson." he said, holding out his hand. I scoffed and turned away, reaching for my laptop.
