I find a couple old photos of me and my friends, my favorite cd's, hair bows, and my favorite sunglasses. I take one last look around my nearly empty room and stop at my bed. I crawl over and smile at one of the oldest objects I have. An old teddy bear I got on my seventh birthday. This thing made me feel safe whenever I was scared, was my best friend when I didn't have one, and has caught more tears than I can remember. It's easily the most valuable thing I own. I carefully placed it in my bag knowing I'll need him.

"We're on our way to college, buddy. We're all grown up now." I said with tears brimming in my eyes. I quickly wipe them away and zip up my bag, taking one last look around my room. I hear a knock on the door.

"Kris? You ready yet?" Brennan asked from behind.

"Yeah, I think so. If I forgot anything I could always drive back." I turned to him.

"You're really going to drive that thing all the way to Bakersfield? What if it breaks down on you?" He asks.

"Then I find new parts and fix it just like I always have." I defend.

"Just get a normal car already. That thing is a beast!" he complains.

"Well that thing is my baby and I love it very much. I'm lucky I even found one." I say.

When I was sixteen, I went out searching for a car, but I didn't want something lame. I had enough money saved up from all the jobs I've had to where I could get almost anything. It took me about two months of serious searching before I finally found it, my dream car. I found a dark green 1973 VW Thing with the paint chipped and faded for sale from an older man. I asked him if I could buy it from him and he gladly sold it to me, seeing how young I was and that I wanted such an old car.

Brennan had shown me how to drive a car with a clutch and how to work the stick shift, so driving it was no problem. My mother tried to make me sell it and get something like a Honda, but she eventually gave up seeing that I would not give in to her.

"Well let's go then." he says.

"Can I get one more piggy back ride Bren?"

"Aw, c'mon sporto! You're too big now." he whines.

"Please? I'm going away to college, Bren. I won't be able to do this until I come home for breaks." I beg. He lets out a deep sigh then smiles. He turns around and kneels on the ground for me to climb on his back.

"Jesus, kid. What do you have in that pack of yours?"

"I got my Shakespeare book in it."

"Nerd." He teases. I lightly smack his head.

"Y'know, you really should try to be a little nicer to Mom. Y'know, since you're leaving and all." He says walking down the hall.

I was taken by surprise. "What? No, why? No." I fumbled through my sentence.

"C'mon Kris, you're leaving. You won't be back till God knows when. Just try to be nice to her. Promise?" He turns his head to try to see my face. He's serious about this.

"Fine, I'll give it a shot. But I doubt she'll want to ride in my car." I laugh.

"That's fine. I'll ride with you, Mom will take her car. She can only handle so much of me in one day." He jokes just as we reach the front door.

"Do you have your car keys, dear?" My mother asks when she sees us. I climb off of Brennan.

"Yeah, they're right here, Mom." I say as sweetly as I can. Brennan gives me a nudge with his elbow.

"Oh, uh, so Brennan said that he wants ride with me on the way there, so then you can lead the way in your car. Is that okay with you?" I ask.

She looks at with a smile and walks over to me, grabbing my shoulders. "Of course it is. I'm glad that you'd want to spend the last two hours you have with your big brother."

"Jesus, you make it sound like I'm dying." I scoff. I hear Brennan clear his throat.

"I mean, I'm just going to college. I'll be back as soon as I can. No need to worry." I try to cover up my obvious fumble.

"Well, shall we get going then?" she asks.

"Yeah, sure. Get in the car, loser." I call. I walk around to the driver door and start the car. It comes to life with a loud roar that makes Brennan cover his ears.

"Damn, you can't get a Chevy or Ford why?"

"Because those are lame and this isn't." I chuckle.

"Got your phone?"

"Yep. Now put on your seat belt." I scold.

"If you can even call it that. Look at it, it just goes over the lap!"

"If you don't like it, you can go with Mom." I suggest.

"No way." He shoves my shoulder. I see my mother pull out of the driveway, so I copy her and pull out. She starts down the street and we begin our journey to Bakersfield. CSU, here I come.
