                                                   ~Preface~

Somewhere in the Carpathian mountains a young girl played alone in the trees. Nearby, other children could be heard playing. A man with a dark cloak to cover his face sat on a branch in a tree above her. He looked down at her,

"Why, Salandria, do you sit and play alone?" She looked up at him,

"They fear me, they fear my eyes." He laughed,

"I think your eyes are unique. Much like your spirit." She turned to where the others could be heard playing.

"I want them to suffer." He shifted on the branch, to be closer to her,

"Would you awaken the curse of the eyes?"

"Yes. I would." He smiled and jumped down to land beside her. He passed his hands over her eyes, pausing,

"Are you sure? Once awakened, it can never be put to sleep again..."

"Awaken it." For someone so young, she was very demanding in seeking her revenge. He muttered the incantation. Her eyes shut for a second then she re-opened them.

"I don't feel any different."

"Go look upon those you wish to suffer." She nodded and stood slowly walking to the other children with a strong determination. The man jumped from tree to tree for a while, hearing the screams of pain echo throughout the woods. He laughed,

"A girl of pain, with eyes that bleed.
Stares in the face of the damned.
Once awakened the curse will never die, so this warning I do heed,
Girl of pain, hide your eyes, if you wish for them to stay alive.
Girl of pain, there's so much you don't know.
Your curse can be put to sleep.
Listen carefully, for I must go,
Once you look in the eyes of your beloved,
Your curse will end,
asleep it will be, until you awaken it again."
With his last line said, he disappeared into the night, laughing hysterically.
