The girl went about her business, ignoring her mothers harsh barks at her.
"Scarlet! Scarlet! What are you doing now? Stop that! Help out Mr. Johnson, would you?"
The young girl rolled her eyes at her mother as she stopped kneading the dough in the back of the store and walked through the wooden doorway into the front where they sold the produce.
An old man with little white fluffy tuffs of hair was hunched over using a dark stained wood walking stick to help him from falling over as he looked into the glass cabinet containing the bakery delights. Although Mr. Johnson was a regular customer- he came in every day- Scarlet still couldn't manage to muster up a smile for him. She did still however manage to at least be polite.
"How are you Mr. Johnson?" The girls higher pitched voice rings a happier tone to how she feels inside.
The luckily not-deaf-man looks up at her with glazed eyes as he gives a small smile and replies with, "Old." He then chuckles along to his own comment.
Faking a smile with a little laugh- mostly to be polite- Scarlet says, "We will all be there one day. What can I get for you today?"
"I'll just have a half loaf of your bread thanks." The man smiles.
Turning to her right the girl rips a large size white paper bag from the woven basket and moves to slide open the screen of the cabinet from right to left. She moves aside the sweets shelf to reach the bread shelf at the bottom of the cabinet.
With the silver tongs she grabs that were hanging on the wall, she dives in the glass and grabs the half loaf of bread her customer asked for. Pushing it into the bag and placing it on top of the cabinet- which also serves as a counter with the register- Scarlet then reassembles the shelves, shuts the screen and motions Mr. Johnson towards the cash register.
"You know the price." She laughs as he hands over the $3.50 that he owes her for the food. Before she has the chance to hand over the bag he stops her by saying,
"Now wait." She raises her brown perfectly shaped brows at him. "Turn around."
Very confused she manages to do a completely graceful turn. Back to facing him again, she raises her eyebrows higher than before.
"Ah, I think your hair is getting lighter and lighter by the day. One month ago it was black, two weeks brown and tomorrow it'll be whiter than my own." He says with a hearty laugh.
Scarlet goes to reply but then her mother walks in from the back. She places her worn hand on Scarlet's right shoulder which she tries very hard not to shake off.
Smiling and laughing like it's the most amusing thing, her mother says, "Yes, we will have to die her hair back to blonde one day now."
The three of them pretend to all laugh for moment before he says something startling them both.
"Shame about your daughter, you know? It's been one year today. Still can't believe they don't know what happened to poor Ruby. God bless her."
Instead of laughter they stand there in an awkward silence. Scarlet is almost sure what they are all thinking.
Her mother will be thinking about her poor baby girl and how she never got to say goodbye and how Scarlet is such a horrible reminder of her loss everyday.
Mr. Johnson will be thinking about the two young blonde girls he used to see riding their bikes around the streets together, and how now one of them will never be able to experience a life or family of her own.
Whatever, she was a bitch.
Wanting out of this strange time Scarlet quickly picks up the bag with the bread and cheerily says, "Here you go Mr. Johnson. Have a good day and we'll see you tomorrow!" Before turning around blonde ponytail whipping her face and going back to the dough she was kneading before.
