“So you and your brother don’t seem very alike. But he didn’t seem as socially unaware as you say,” Kurstin comments.
“Oh, well I guess he’s really desperate, since he hasn’t mustered the courage to ask Lou what the WiFi password is. After he figures that out, you won’t see him ever again, he’ll just weasel in his room for the rest of the summer,” I laugh. “But I can’t deny that we’re both really blunt and sarcastic. Probably matrilineal. Not my fault,” I joke.
Kurstin laughs. She slows her bike down and dismounts as the bike slows to a stop in front of a glass fronted drink shop.
There are quite a teenagers sitting in there laughing. Amy's is written across the top.
“There aren’t a lot of people our age in our little town of Canez,” Kurstin comments as she pushes open the door, “But this is where most of us hang out.”
She smiles and waves to someone who calls out to her and she walks up to the cashier, “I suggest getting a smoothie, just take a pick at any smoothie flavor and it’ll be good, trust me.” She orders a mango smoothie and I pick out a strawberry banana one.
“Yo Kurstin!” someone calls. We both turn around. A guy wearing a red shirt is waving at Kurstin with a huge grin across his face.
“Hey Austin!” Kurstin calls back. She looks at me, “Come on, those are my friends.”
She leads me to the table which they sit at and there is conveniently two empty seats. I awkwardly sit down next to Kurstin.
“Guys, this is Casey, she’s going to live with Lou for the summer,” Kurstin says, smiling brightly.
“Hi Casey,” Austin says.
The other girl smiles, “Hi. Lou's house is pretty cool, with the turret and all.”
I didn’t think it looked that cool, it looked kind of off and out of place next to the sweet and cutesy looking houses that were next to it.
“Casey,” Kurstin says, “This is Austin and Lissey.”
“Hi,” I say, a little unsure of myself. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to squeeze in with them since they seem to have already made a close-knit friendship.
Austin laughs a little bit and nods at the drink in my hand, “I see Kurstin has already infected you with her love of smoothies.”
“Shut up Austin, their smoothies are good!” Kurstin says, giving Austin a little shove. Austin flicks her in the forehead.
“It’s okay Kurstin, it’s okay to be obsessed with things.”
I take a drink of the smoothies.
“Well, they are good,” I say shortly, sitting down next to Kurstin.
Kurstin gives Austin the see?, look and Austin rolls his eyes.
“You guys didn’t tell me that you were coming to Amy's,” Kurstin says, in a teasingly scolding voice.
“We were about to call you, but you didn’t pick up your phone,” Lissey explains, twirling her straw in whatever drink she had placed on the small table.
“I took the canoe out,” Kurstin replies, almost shortly.
“By yourself?” Austin almost laughs.
Kurstin rolls her eyes, “Its nice, as long as you aren’t there.”
“Aw, Kurstin,” Austin says pouting.
Kurstin takes the chance to poke Austin on the nose. I can’t help but almost giggle.
“Hey!” Austin says, swatting Kurstin’s hand away, which had already been retracted out of his reach.
Lissey turns to me, “Since they seemingly can’t stop flirting, I guess we can just have our own little conversation.”
“Ew!” Austin says at the same time Kurstin glares at her and says something about Austin liking another girl.
Lissey laughs, “So you’re staying here in the summer?”
“Yup,” I reply, nodding, as I take another sip of the pink smoothie.
Lissey nods, “Well, I guess you’ll just have to see and live through the boring summers here at Lake Tantil.” Austin sticks his tongue out when Lissey makes this statement.
“That’s what it seems like from the outside and stuff, we make it fun,” Austin pats his chest, proudly.
Kurstin scoffs, “In your dreams.”
Lissey raises her eyebrows in a you see way. “Flirting,” Lissey says, waving a hand, as if dismissing them, “All day…”
“I told you already, Lis, we’re not flirting,” Austin protests, standing up.
Lissey smiles sweetly, “Tell me the day pigs fly and I might just believe you.”
“Damned pigs, why don’t they fly already,” Austin mutters glaring out the sky a little bit too dramatically.
“No cursing,” Lissey scolds. I look at her, my head tilted a little. There were people I knew who didn’t swear but not many of them were completely against swearing. Lissey sees my look, “My mom hates swearing, and whenever he comes over to our house, he always swears and, well you get the idea.”
“Okay,” I reply, nodding a little bit. “Is Lissey short for anything?” I ask.
“Elisanya,” Austin jumps in, interrupting a grin spread across his face.
“Who wants to be called Elisanya? It doesn’t even flow off your tongue properly. And everyone always says Eleeeseeaah-anya like its two separate names and its just long and fancy shmancy sounding. Lissey is much better,” Lissey explains almost ranting a bit.
She brushes her hair behind her shoulder and picks up her drink.
“Look who’s here,” Kurstin says, grimacing after a short breath of silence.
I twist around, half expecting a super pretty girl and her whole gang waltzing in Mean Girls style. Instead I see a short-ish girl with medium curly hair her face flushed.
“That’s Gaby, big time gossiper, big-ass flirt, and just likes to mess with people,” Kurstin mutters under her breath, almost reveling in her anger or something.
“Not to try to butt into your life, but did something happen between you two?” I ask, trying to be gentle with my voice and hopefully succeeding. I’m not sure if I succeeded, but I know I didn’t make her angry since she does reply, but only with a simple nod.
I used to think this was just a little quiet town filled with old ladies and little children, but boy am I wrong.
