Chapter ↞ Three

Odell

Throughout the car ride, I noticed Nalani was really quiet. She barely said three words to me since we left the house. She just leaned to the right and looked out the window.

Deciding to break the silence, I spoke up, "Hey, Nalani, are you okay? You haven't spoke a lot since you left the house. Did something happen?"

Nalani turned to me, "I'm fine Odell." She answered with a small smile. Off the back, I could tell her smile was fake.

"Are you sure Nani? You know you can tell me wassup, right?"

She nodded, "Yes. I'm telling you, I'm fine Odell."

"Alright. But hey, I have something that you might want to listen to." We came to a stop at the light. I pulled out my phone and plugged in my aux cord. Nalani just watched me with her eyebrows scrunched.

I scrolled through my playlist searching for the song. When I found Always Be My Baby by Mariah Carey, I pressed play.

Nalani looked at me with her mouth hung low, "Odell...I haven't heard this song in ages."

"I know," I smiled, "This was the last song we listened to before I was adopted. We were crying like babies." I chuckled.

"I remember. Oh my god." Nalani covered her face with her hands, "Odell you're going to make me cry."

"You want me to change it? I will." I was getting ready to change the song until she stopped me.

"No, no, keep it. It's okay." I just nodded and began to drive again when the light turned green.

"How do you like those?" Odell asked me. I was currently trying on sneakers, figuring out which ones I should get. Of course with the help of Odell.

"They're nice. I like red." I said, looking down at the all red leather Adidas Superstars.

"So do I. Pick out two more pairs." Odell said. I looked at him with my eyebrows raised.

"Odell, I really appreciate it but no. I think one pair is enough for me." I shook my head. Odell sat back in the seat and laughed.

"Nah, it's not. Like I said, pick out two more pairs Nani. I have enough money." He insisted.

"I feel so needy." I sighed.

"No, I'm just helping out a childhood friend. Hey, look at all of this as an apology gift for leaving and not speaking to you. Okay?" Odell asked. I nodded with a little smile.

"Yeah. Thank you so much Odell." I thanked. He flashed a smile and nodded.

"What type of clothes you like?" I asked Nalani. She looked at me and shrugged her shoulders,

"I really don't know. Anything is fine at this point." She replied. I chuckled and took her hand before taking her into Forever 21.
