Winter Johnson, has hair as white as snow and eyes as blue as the ocean. She lives in district 4 with her three year older twin brothers, Leaf and Sam. Even though living in district 4, the one thing 14 year old Winter fears the most is the games. W...
I dive down feeling the water go through my hair and out of my eyes. I grab the fishing net and push myself back up to the surface, I gasp for air. "Any fish?" My father asks, I look in the net and see 5 trout. "Five." I say looking up at my father and two brothers. "Perfect, let's go make some lunch." I push myself up out of the water on to the fishing dock, water dripping from my swimmers. I look up and see my two brothers both extending a hand. They pull me up to my feet, lifting me slightly off the ground. "Thanks." I say as we start to head home.
We get home and I see my mother she smiles. I lift up the net and show my mother the fish we caught. "We've got lunch," I say as I hand the net to her. "Good, now you three go wash your selves and get ready for the reaping." I sigh as I remember what day it is, Sam puts a hand on my shoulder. "I don't think she needs to, she already has in the ocean," he says with a grin. I smile, him and Leaf always know how to cheer me up when I need it the most. Leaf puts his hand on my other shoulder. "Don't worry, it will be fine I promise." Leaf says, I nod as I head up stairs to go wash my self.
I pour water over my head and start to scrub my body. I started with my face and neck and worked my way down to my feet, until there was no dirt on me. I sigh as I grab a towel and start to dry myself. I walk out of the bathroom to my room and find my mother has left a light blue jumpsuit that cuts off at my knees and is very loose and flowing. It looks like a dress but its not, my mother knows how much I hate dresses so she found me an alternative. I put it on and look in the mirror, I am immediately drawn to my eyes. The blue from the jumpsuit makes my eyes pop, I smile and put on some white sandals and my outfit is done. I sit down at my dresser and pick up my hair brush and slowly brush my hair and hum a song slowly. I left my hair out, it had slight curls and dropped down to about halfway on chest. I was finally done.
I head downstairs and see the twins, they were wearing the exact same thing. Black jeans and a white button shirt, they smiled at me.
"Lunch is ready." Our father yells from the kitchen. I sit down at the table and put one napkin on my lap and tuck the corner of another in the front of my jumpsuit. Even though I'm 14 I am a very messy eater, the fish we caught got baked and we had salad with it. While eating lunch we were silent, the only noise that echoed through the dining room was our knives and forks against our plates. Once I'd finished I put my knife and fork in the middle of the plate and I put my two messy napkins on top. I sighed thinking positive thoughts, I kept telling myself things like "Everything will be alright" or "It's only three times". (As in the number of times reaped). Leaf cleared his throat, "We have to go now," he with sadness in his voice. I looked down at the ground as I shed a tear, my mother stood up and faced me with her arms open. I stood up and hugged her, crying into her shoulder. "I love you, and don't ever forget that. No matter what happens, ok?" I managed an ok through the sobs. She looked up at the twins, "Same with you two, don't ever forget." They came up to us and hugged us. "We won't mother."Said Leaf. "We won't." Said Sam.
We started on our way to the reaping, everyone in silence. Once we reached the square we had to line up to get some of our blood taken. I turned back to the twins, they gave me a warm smile before hugging me. "Hey, don't worry we'll see you after the reaping." Leaf said. "We'll see you soon," Sam said. "Everything will be ok." He broke the hug before going our separate ways. I lined up and waited. The line moved at a steady pace, eventually I reached the front of the line.
"Name?" "Winter..Spears.." I said stuttering. The lady yanked my hand towards her, pricked my finger with a needle before pushing it down next to my name. "Next." She said letting go of my hand. I walked over to the girl side of the square and lined up somewhere in the middle. I slowly breathed in and out, trying to stay calm. But by the sounds of my breath I only made it worse, I looked around starting to panick. I spotted my brothers, they were looking at me with sympathy in their eyes. "It's Ok" Leaf mouthed, "You'll be alright" Sam mouthed. I sighed and noded.
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 66th annual hunger games," Sophia Twitch said as she strutted on to the stage. "Now the time has come to select one courageous, man and woman. For the honor of representing district 4 in the 66th annual hunger games, and may the odds be ever in your favour. Now, as always, ladies first." She walked over to the giant glass bowl with heaps of little white slips of paper inside, closest to me. She hovered her hand over the top of it before digging deep before picking out a single slip of paper. I swallowed hard as she walked over to the microphone. "The female tribute who will be representing district 4 is..." she opened the slip of paper and said the thing I was fearing all day.
