I looked into the mirror and sighed. I was going to have to find a better dress, as I had grown out of the pale blue one I had worn last year. And the year before that.
"MOM!" I called, strolling into the bedroom adjacent to mine, where my fair-haired Mother sat, staring blankly at the wall.
"Urm, mom," I called softly, walking behind her and tapping her shoulder. She jumped violently; looking round at me and smiling a strained smile. Her normally twinkling, bright blue eyes were now murky and dull, full of worry about the Reaping.
"Yes, honey?" She asked, standing up.
"My blue dress doesn't fit anymore and it's the only dress I own," I complain, trying to think if I could wear my best blouse and trousers.
"I'm sure you'll fit into one of my old dresses now, you're about the same size as me," she chuckled.
She was right. My mother had always been on the small side, with petite features about everywhere. I was nearly an exact copy, standing slightly shorter at 5'3. We both had long blonde hair and pale blue eyes, long eyelashes, though my nose more button like and my lips more plump. I'm considered pretty among my classmates, though I just see myself as plain.
The only thing different is that I have my father's personality and his smart nature. Though, being smart can't stop an electrical current running through your body at lightning speeds. It's still unclear on how my father managed to touch that loose wire, but I still miss him and remember the day of his death like it was yesterday, not when I was 7.
"How about this one? I wore this too three of my Reapings," she said, holding up a short, lilac, pettifor dress. There were white frills along the collar. It was cute, but it was childish.
"Mom, won't that make me look 12? I already look younger than I am," I sigh, looking down at my small body.
"Well, the only other dress I have that will fit you is this one," she says, holding up a frilly, pink dress with red bows along the hem. I shudder.
"This ones fine, thanks mom," I smile, hugging her. She holds onto me like a life line, stroking my hair and breathing in my scent as if I was about to disappear any second. Though, with my name in their 5 times, there could be a chance of it happening.
"We'll get you a nice new one for next year, okay? Now, go get ready you have half an hour," she said, glancing at the digital clock next to her.
I nodded and walked back into my room, gazing out my window at District 5, my home.
I tear my gaze away and pull on my dress, looking in the mirror and sighing yet again. The dress made me look like a child, and my youthful- babyface didn't help with my appearance. I cursed, if I was picked for this disgusting, slaughtering, hellish game, being cute wasn't going to get me taken seriously.
"Nina! Come on it's time to go!" Mom yells, fixing the strap of her shoe. I gulp and look into the mirror one last time, putting on a stoneish face just to make me look more intimidating, incase I am picked and my face is broadcasted to the whole of Panem.
We got there in almost no time, having our house closer to the District Centre. The woman pricked my finger and I winced a little, still not used to the sight of my own blood.
I stumbled over to the 14-year old section, trying to ignore the constant beating off my heart, as butterflies bubbled in my stomach, making me feel sick.
