The move

I wake when my head hits the window as Dad slams on the breaks. I look up to see deer hurtling across the road narrowly missing the car that has now come to a halt. There is nothing but trees around us on a deserted road. "when you said, we were moving to the middle of nowhere you really meant it" I say with a little bit of menace in my voice. "you'll learn to love it Lil I promise" dad says back but it sounded like he was trying to convince himself as well as everyone else.

I look down at an unconscious Koa who could sleep through a hurricane and slowly try to pull my dead arm out from under her head but to no avail. We had been travelling for 7 hours now in our mini bus that we bought specifically for the trip because our 8-seater van could fit us all but not with all our belongings. "are we there yet" comes from the back of the bus from a stroppy Helix. You wouldn't think he was the second oldest but it happens to be true. Ash glares at him from beside me "only half an hour Hunny I promise" comes from the front passage seat where mum sits.

But in less than half an hour we pull up to a two story house that looks like it's about to fall apart and we all pile out of the bus thankful that we get to stretch our legs for the first time since we stopped 4 hours ago for a petrol and bathroom stop. The three boys grab the key off dad to go investigate the house and probably fight about rooms. The house has 5 rooms which means that there will be 2 double ups. Mum leaves to go and get food for dinner and the rest of us walk into the house. " I bagsed it first" "no I did" "no I did" we hear from upstairs and dad rolls his eyes making his way upstairs to as he says 'knock some heads together' while Koa, Emily and I all look around. The lounge is just a big open space with peeling paint and stained carpet that looks like it's never had a clean ever. We walk into the kitchen which is actually a decent space with a somewhat Island in the middle. A new hob and cabinets and that's as far as it goes. No oven like someone did eat very often in this house.

We sat around the table after everyone had set up their rooms and beds with everyone finally agreeing on the arrangements when we finally noticed that Ash wasn't here and I realised I hadn't seen him since we got here. "where Ash?" I voice my concern but mum and dad didn't seem to be bothered by the absence of their oldest child. "he's probably found some friends" dad says without even looking up from the curry that mum made. It wasn't like them to not be so easy going which made me anxious. After dinner, I went to bed with the thought of exploring tomorrow.

The township was very small with bush all around and only a little store, dinner, gas station and a school. I wonder into the dinner and order french toast with bacon and banana and a coffee. I expected it to be dead but there were about 20 people in either getting a coffee or eating. I noticed after a while that there was no cellphone service and I swore, catching the attention of most people in the room. The waitress/ owner brought my food to me with a big smile "you must be new around here I haven't seen you around before" she said. I read her name badge. Macy what a gentle name "yea we just moved in down the road 47 I don't know the street though my names Lily cooper". Her face paled by 3 shades when I mentioned the house number but she quickly smiled and tried to cover up. "it's a lovely old house but don't go down to the basement" she said which intrigued me. " I didn't know it had a basement" I tell her and she inwardly cringes. I smile at her thanking her for the food before I begin to scoff my food as fast as I can so I can get home and explore this forbidden basement.
